Released today... I believe this is some of my best piano work (especially the last 15 seconds!) because the wonderful Good Time Locomotive drew the emotions out of me with this truly touching, uplifting song.

Wow, I'm featured in this wonderful collection of covers of songs by my favourite band The Cure, with all proceeds going to Mind which is a great charity... I've covered the 1985 classic "Kyoto Song"! Check it out!

Today, we announce details of 'Pictures of You: A compilation of covers of songs by The Cure' in aid of Mind Charity. Inspired by our ten days of the Cure back in February we put the call out for cover versions and the response was overwhelming.

It follows the release of our R.E.M. covers compilation on Bandcamp raising £5000 for Help Musicians in 2021 and winning the endorsement of the band in the process and last year’s Kylie Minogue compilation that made over £1000 in aid of Macmillan Cancer charity.

Below we exclusively reveal the track list. Pre-orders will open on Bandcamp tomorrow, Friday the 7th of July on the anniversary of The Cure’s first ever gig. Those who pre-order will receive the covers by Hamish Brown & Andrew Eaton-Lewis (Swimmer One ) Julianne Regan Projects, Iceblynk and Lunar Bird ahead of the full release on Friday 4th of August.

It’s an incredibly eclectic selection of covers of songs by The Cure that takes in straight ahead takes, synth pop reinterpretations, EDM reimaginings, grunge rock reworks, post-punk noise and haunting dream pop takes, with just the right amount of weirdness along the way. It’s all done with affection for one of Britain’s best bands!

"Particularly impressed were Anno, Lee Billy and Alberto from the band Kicks Joy Darkness, long-time friends and partners on the London live circuit: they were heading off to Italy to record their first album, but would be back in the winter to work with us on the studio. We played one last show with KjD in the Dublin Castle - which was so good even the police turned up - then waved them off to Italy, and settled in our bizarre new home. There was no natural light downstairs, just three cold flourescent striplights, which gave it the feel of an insect house. The lack of ventilation made it impossible to go upstairs all summer, so we buzzed around downstairs, sweltering in swimming trunks as we practised."

"'Unit 13' is a warehouse on an industrial complex near Hackney, London; for a year it was also our home. We moved there in the summer of 2001, with dreams of building an all-in-one rehearsal / recording facility for us and our friends in other bands. It had its drawbacks - the smell, the lack of hot water, the butchers who turned up at dawn every day - but it was a place where we could make as much noise as we wanted, and was therefore ideal."

....and the 20th anniversary remaster of "Unit 13" is now IMMINENT!

The Carnival of Souls remaster series continues...

"Take Your Dream & Go" took its name from an exhortation by Afriqua, the young student who partly mixed the album in Alchemea, a sound engineering college in North London. (Don't look for it, it's not there anymore.) We tried to pay him for the night's work and he gave us this advice instead.

So we did, hawking CD copies at our gigs during 2001-2; they didn't exactly fly off the merch table (mainly because we didn't have one) but with the help of a fresh, eye-catching cover by Devil's Kitchen Design the album became our first actual product.

Recorded across 1999-2001, it's a hodge-podge of studio sessions and home demos; it's also the most psychedelic Souls effort, bookended as it is (in this re-jigged version) by two wildly different mixes of our dub tribute to Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey".

For this 2023 remaster, the tracklisting has been altered to excise demos of songs that would be re-recorded for the next album, to include in their place some tracks that never made it that far, and generally to make the whole experience feel more like a coherent album.

As a taster, here's an instrumental track that didn't make the final cut first time around, featuring founding member George Apsion on acoustic guitar, this biker named Russell on bass, and another bloke called Leonard trying to play trumpet while on a hideous comedown.

My friend Robert & I were invited to provide music for a stage production of "Tom & Viv" - a play about TS Eliot and his wife Vivian's deteriorating mental health, and their shared work creating "The Waste Land", the great poem of the 20th Century. We lit candles and knocked out four instrumental tracks, all named after Eliot quotations; my brother Chris played Viv's brother Maurice, and did a splendid job. It played in Twickenham, down by the river.

This is where it all began.

As impossible as it is to believe, "Unit 13" is about to reach its 20th anniversary. In honour of this, we're remastering and re-releasing Carnival Of Souls across Spotify over the coming months.

And it starts here: from guitar duelling under the weeping willows in Wiltshire, to three days of drinking Pyramid tea bags in a Bethnal Green studio owned by a hippie called Fred, we forged a sound called "ghost-goth".

Acoustic guitar, piano, violin. Simple songs of darkness and redemption. "Redchurch" will be released on Valentine's Day, through Spotify and all good online retailers. Fingers crossed.

I don't want to say too much for fear of jinxing it, but an incredibly exciting collaboration may potentially be in the pipeline... if this comes off it'll be epic beyond belief! 🤞

Ten years apart... same old fingers

The Gronk remaster series continues... This is a special one for me, a collaboration with guitar and mandola player Robert Pinnock, who brought a metric tonne of musical ideas to my house for recording. We jerry-rigged a studio using a battered old Macbook with an 8-track cassette recorder as the mixing desk and, starting on Twelfth Night and finishing on St. Patrick's Day 2016, recorded this 12-track instrumental album.

It's a lovely, contemplative listen and I've never heard anything that sounds quite like it; the musical chemistry was there from the start, and it being our first work together created a sense of restraint that I think is very tasteful. We would reunite later that year to make another album in a more rootin'-tootin' style, but that story must be saved for a forthcoming reissue.
