Garden maintenance including:
Lawn cut
First job today grinding the egg shells. I dry them in the oven then use a blender to get them very fine.
I sprinkle them around the base of my tomatoes about every 2 weeks along with pelleted chicken manure. It will be watered in later this evening.
Tomatoes seem to be doing well on it.
Now don’t be laughing if you see me pushing my mower down the road with my collection of tools.
What’s a girl to do when she’s lost her wheels, well the van wheels anyway. Maybe I could rig up a chair on my mower and put it in self drive…….now there’s an idea 😃😁
Saw this and just had to share. 😂😂😂
After another week of wet weather interrupting work, then my lawn mower breaking, I will definitely be doing this over the weekend.
Tomato plants now ready for collection. Keep them on a sunny window ledge and watch them grow.
Available this year:
• Principle Borghese – small grape shaped fruits, Italian heirloom bred. Good all round tomato and can be sun dried
• Sunchocola - red/chocolate brown flesh with a slight smoky, sweet tangy flavour
• Sungold – exquisitely sweet, small yellow orange tomatoes, these have to be my favourite!
• Sweet Million – heavy cropper producing delicious shiny cherry sized tomatoes
• Saint Pierre - The ‘Saint Pierre’ tomato variety is known for its large, juicy fruits.
• Super Mama - Large Roma type tomatoes up to 500g/1lb each, fruit are fleshy with fewer seeds and have some resistance to blossom end rot.
• Sweet Aperitif - Noted for their high sugar content, the fruits are sweet, but the flavour is well balanced with a slight tang. Perfect in pots, can either be grown on the patio or in the greenhouse.
• Minibel - This variety produces bite-sized cherry tomatoes with an irresistible, sweet flavour. Bush type
All varieties are £1.00 each or 6 for £5
So another week of rain forecast, when will it stop!
I can’t remember such a wet winter, the ground just starts to drain and then it rains again. Trying to cut grass in this is impossible, chewing up the ground and leaving a soggy mess. Trying to w**d flower/veg beds that are stood in water is also no good.
Seems it’s going to be a late start this year. Couple of days working and then three not.
Looks like I’ll be working in my shed today, I’ve tomatoes to prick out and repot. 😊
The joys of working with nature! 😳
Busy day today getting my potatoes in. I do container growing for potatoes to free up planting space. Today I’ve planted salad potatoes and first earlies.
I put about 4 inches of soil, which is made up of last years soil plus leaf mould and some pelleted chicken manure, in the bottom of the bucket. Next I place two potatoes opposite each other. I then add another 4-6 inches of soil and then place another 2 potatoes in the opposite sides of the bucket. I top that with another 4 inches of soil.
I will keep them in my shed, come greenhouse to protect from frost for at least another 4 weeks.
As the foliage starts to appear I top up the bucket with more soil until it’s filled to just a smidge below the top.
I will do the main crop in around 3-4 weeks time.
I’ve also put my seedlings in on the heated bench. Tomatoes, cucumbers, chillies, peppers, melon, pumpkin, broccoli, cauliflower, sprouts as well as cosmos, campanula and antirrhinum.
No lights needed yet. The bench will slowly warm them up and the lights and reflectors will go on once they’ve germinated.
This is a butternut squash.
Nothing unusual about that except I grew this and harvested it around the end of September.
So much waste in this world when veggies/fruit can last for months.
Well I’m going to enjoy this stuffed with butter beans, mushrooms, onions, garlic and tomatoes, topped off with cheese and bobbed back into the oven to brown off.
Still got a number of spaghetti squash to work through and they will keep for several more months.
😂😂😂😂
Busy day yesterday in the garden and just in time before the rain.
Emptied one of my dalek compost bins onto the veg beds, refilled it and future proofed it by putting chicken wire under the bottom to stop the furry friends getting in.
Next was the new bed created by the removal of some conifers. Lots of digging to get a rather large Magnolia in as a central point and then climbing roses plus perennials and allium bulbs. Ive some dahlias on order so that will complete the area.
Ground wasn’t ideal, very wet and as the new area hadn’t been dug before there was lots of clay to deal with. Clay contains lots of minerals that are really good for plants however if left compacted cause drainage issues and can cause your plants to rot.
Anyway that job is complete now, still quite a bit of tidying up to do as the lawn is covered in branches that broke off from the poplar trees in the storms we’ve been having. I’ve also a section of lawn that’s sunk quite a bit. Before we moved in there had been a pond and the previous owners filled it in and put a circular patio where it had been. I removed the patio when the new lawns were added, I suspect whatever they filled in the pond with, has now rotted down so I’ll have to investigate what’s going on there.
Next job is to start my seedlings off, starting with my tomatoes, chillis and peppers. Heated bench is already on and full spectrum lights at the ready.
It was good to get out in the garden, the promise of lovely flower beds and delicious vegetables to come, roll on spring and summer 2024. 💕💕
Merry Christmas to all my friends customers and followers.

Just wanted to say a big Thankyou to friends and customers who braved the cold to support me on my first Christmas market.
We managed to keep the gazebo in one spot by weighing it down with blocks and set up our ‘grotto’ style display.
Hoping to have another one in the next week but just waiting for confirmation.
Thank you everyone, your support really meant a lot to me. 😊🤶
