⭐Traffic Management Alert: A465/A470 Junction

Please note in the coming weeks finishing works will be undertaken on A465 at the A470 Junction.

This will mean that at times A465 through traffic will be diverted onto the slip roads.

If you are making a journey that would normally take you over the A470, you will instead need to use the relevant slip road to take you onto the A470 Junction. Then use the roundabout to re-join the A465.

This work will be intermittent and will apply to both east and westbound traffic.

Please take this into consideration when travelling through this area in the coming weeks.

Thank you for your continued support during the construction work.

⭐IMPORTANT UPDATE and Reminder:
A465 Traffic Management Alert

With the A465/A470 Roundabout Junction becoming fully operational the diversion route has changed. This will make travel for many road users easier during the upcoming weekend closure of the A470.

Please see the information below, and the diversion map for details of how to travel through the area during this closure.

From 20:00 on Friday 25 until 06:00 on Monday 28 October 2024. This closure will take place from the A465/A470 junction (Cefn Coed) to the A4054 (Upper High St Cefn Coed) junction.

This closure is to the north of the A465/A470 Junction where the north roundabout will be closed. The south roundabout will remain open for westbound access on and off the A465.

An official diversion route that shows the closed section of road can be seen here: www.a465.org/A470NorthDiversion

Travel Information:
• For A465 through traffic. If you do not need to leave the A465 at the junction with the A470, you can now travel over the junction using the new bridge. This applies to both East and Westbound traffic.

• If you are travelling Eastbound (from the direction of Swansea) and want to join the A470 Southbound (towards Cardiff) – stay on the A465 and head to Dowlais Top. Then join the A4060. This will be signposted and will take you to the A470 junction at Pentrebach.

• If you are travelling Eastbound (from the direction of Swansea) and want to join the A470 Northbound (towards Brecon) – at the Rhigos Junction follow the diversion that will take you onto the A4059 through Penderyn.

• If you are travelling Westbound (from the direction of Dowlais Top) at the A465/A470 Junction you can use the off-slip road to join the A470 Southbound (towards Cardiff).

• If you are travelling on the A470 heading Northwards, and you want to head West on the A465 in the direction of Swansea you can use the on-slip road to join the A465 Westbound.

• If you are travelling North on the A470 heading towards Brecon, at the A465/A470 Junction the diversion will take you on to the A465 Westbound. When you get to the Rhigos Junction you will leave the A465 and follow the diversion route that will take you onto the A4059 through Penderyn.

This closure is needed to allow road surfacing and finishing works to take place at the North Roundabout at the A470/A465 Junction.

⭐Special Announcement
The A465/A470 Roundabout Junction at Cefn Coed is now fully operational.

This means that for the first time ever A465 traffic can now travel over the A470 on the new bridge.

Through traffic no longer needs to leave the A465 at this junction. For both east and westbound A465 traffic you can simply remain on the road and travel over the junction.

If you are on the A465 and want to join the A470 to head south (in the direction of Cardiff) or north (in the direction of Brecon), all you need to do is use the signposted slip roads to take you off the A465 and onto the junction.

If you are on the A470 and want to join the A465 to head either east (in the direction of Abergavenny) or west (in the direction of Neath), again all you need to do is use the signposted slip roads to take you from the junction and onto the A465.

The illustration shows the new junction layout. Please take time to familiarise yourself with this new layout.

Initially, A465 traffic at this junction will continue to be a single lane in each direction and will run at the 40mph speed limit. This is to ensure everyone’s safety within the construction site.

However, when completed the A465 between Hirwaun and Dowlais Top will be a full dual carriageway with a speed limit of 70mph.

Making this junction operational is the latest milestone in the construction project and we are pleased to be able to deliver this ahead of schedule. It was originally planned to become operational in December 2024. It is a result of the team working exceptionally hard that we have been able to achieve this.

The next milestone will be to make the junction at Dowlais Top fully operational and the current plan is to achieve this by Christmas 2024.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing patience and support for this technically complex construction project that is now less than a year away from completion.
