Acne breakouts and oily, breakout-prone skin can be challenging but understanding what acne is and how we can manage it can make a big difference.

What is acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. It can present in many ways including blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and even cystic lesions which can be very painful.

Main Causes of Acne:

Excess Oil Production: Overactive sebaceous glands can produce too much oil, leading to clogged pores.

Dead Skin Cells: When dead skin cells aren’t shed properly, they can mix with oil and clog pores.

Bacteria: Propionibacterium acnes bacteria can build up and cause inflammation.

Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations in hormones, especially during puberty, menstrual cycles, or stress, can trigger breakouts.

Diet and Lifestyle: Certain foods, stress levels, and lack of proper skincare can exacerbate acne.

I am delighted to share the incredible results of my lovely patient, Ellie, who has allowed me to share her journey with you.

When Ellie first came to me after we met at a wedding show, she was struggling with breakout-prone skin, congestion, and painful pustules that weren’t improving with her current skincare plan.

We used a combination of a course of chemical peels and Obagi Medical Grade skincare that included prescription-only Obagi products. It’s important to remember that achieving clear skin takes time, dedication and commitment. Ellie experienced some purging initially, but this was all part of the process. Her skin is now well hydrated, minimal pores, even tone and texture and sebum production is well controlled and she experiences minimal breakouts. We have some more treatments planned to maximise her skin health ahead of her big day.
