Call us incurable optimists but it’s true, we are. We may play just a small part in the journey to a greener world but it’s only when you take a moment to look back at all the little things you’ve done, that you can see it did make a difference after all. So here’s to 2024 and all the positive, little green shoots of optimism that we can nurture each day… if we choose to see it that way.

We asked 2000 adults in the uk whether they think an artificial tree is better for the environment or a real tree is best.

More people thought an artificial tree is better! But in fact research and statistics show that in order for an artificial tree to be better for the environment, you’d have to use it for at least ten years!

It might not quite be time to think about Christmas dinner for this year but we just wanted to share a little fact we discovered. Did you know, a standard Christmas dinner shopping for four (without any alcohol or cooking oils) emits around 23.75kg of CO2e - that’s before any of the cooking happens, just from the basic food items alone. For context, that’s roughly the carbon dioxide equivalent of driving a standard petrol car for 233 miles!
We’ve got a blog full of facts and tips on how to make your Christmas dinner a little more sustainable. https://www.greenenergyuk.com/blog/sustainability/grow-your-own-vegetables-christmas

Making sure your home stays warm and cosy this winter without the need to crank up the thermostat is not only good for your pocket but also our environment. We’ve put together a few helpful hints and tips that may sound basic, but they do remind us there are some simple things we can do to make a difference.

For example, one of the simplest and probably most old-fashioned ways of reducing your energy consumption and keeping your home warm is to draw your curtains or blinds. These can keep the cold from coming in and keep the heat from escaping out. For more little reminders, check out our blog – https://www.greenenergyuk.com/blog/learn/energy_saving_tips_this_winter

Why spend money on unsustainable decorations when nature provides such beautiful and simple delights. This gorgeous display is made by choosing a few branches and hanging leaves at different lengths.
For more autumnal ideas take a look at our latest blog. https://www.greenenergyuk.com/blog/sustainability/sustainable_halloween_decorations

We love this simple idea of creating mini monsters out of pinecones. You just need a colourful collection of leaves and even berries (but don’t eat them) and you can make your own Halloween critters to enjoy during the season.

It’s that time of year when the shops fill up with decorations. First Halloween, notorious for cheap, plastic toot which lasts a minute and ends up in the genera waste. Followed quickly by Christmas; full of glittery, shiny baubles and bells. But the autumn months leading to winter are a treasure trove of natural delights that, with a little creativity, can be turned into sustainable, beautiful decorations fit for any magazine cover. Why not take advantage of the late, warm weather this weekend and go for a walk to see what inspiration you can find. We’ll be sharing some of our favourite ideas too. 🙂 100Green

The summer holiday’s are drawing to a close – but if you are looking for some inspiration on how to make through the final few days with the kids in tow, then here’s an idea.

WalkingBritain.co.uk (Walking Britain) has thousands of FREE walks that you can download. The beauty of these walks is they are written out in a descriptive way – a bit like a treasure hunt! The kids will have so much fun reading out the instructions and looking for the points of reference. Here’s a quick extract:

“Walk towards the clump of trees and turn left along a clear track. After 350 metres fork left and continue to the windmill. After viewing the windmill, retrace your steps back to the track and turn sharp left. The track runs beside woodland on your left.”

There are walks for every region across the UK – so wherever you are you can get outdoors and discover new places.

Green gas is simply gas that has been produced in a way that is kinder to our planet. We are the only supplier in the country to offer 100% green gas. That means that we haven’t bought any gas generated using fossil fuels or nuclear and which is why we don’t have to carbon offset any of it… because it’s already green. If you want to find out more about our green gas and how it’s made (it’s a process called anaerobic digestion)… then just visit 100Green.com/greengas

Why we don’t carbon offset our energy:
It’s true that carbon offsetting schemes have done wonders to raise awareness of our impact on the environment. But at 100Green we are keen to tackle the issue at it’s source by only buying green and renewable energy. That means there is nothing to offset.

Our suppliers use the force of the wind to drive turbines, which in turn make electricity.

The energy generated for our EKO tariff means that our suppliers need to ensure that their wind farms are located away from bird migration paths – making it uber–environmentally friendly. :) It’s great to see so many turbines popping up but even the generation of green energy needs careful consideration.

Energy from 93 million miles away!

A solar cell (or a ‘photovoltaic cell’ to you scientists out there) takes the light from the sun and converts it into electricity.

At 100Green we don’t generate our own energy. Instead, we focus on ensuring that all our tariffs provide 100% green and renewable energy generated by both commercial and domestic generators from across the UK.

First, how do solar panels work? Well, they absorb sunlight – believe it or not, there’s still plenty of it available in the UK, despite our hit-and-miss weather – and then they convert it into what’s called direct current (DC) energy. The DC energy is then converted into alternating current (AC) energy, which then enters into the home. AC energy is what powers household electrical appliances.

That’s the short and simple explanation of course 😉 . For more visit www.100Green.com/blog/learn/how_we_use_solar_panels_to_generate_electricity
