Maggie Aderin-Pocock is a space scientist who went from crafting a homemade telescope in her teenage bedroom to working for the ministry of defence, helping space research internationally and inspiring other young girls to pursue a career in the stars 🌠
Aderin-Pocock was born and raised in Camden, London, to Nigerian parents. Her middle name Ebunoluwa comes from the Yoruba language meaning "gift" and "God", which can translate to "gift of God". Battling with dyslexia in her early years, Pocock achieved four A-levels, a bachelor's degree in physics and a PhD in mechanical engineering. She worked at the Ministry of Defence building missile warning systems and landmine detectors before returning to space science. She is an Honorary Research Associate at University College London and has helped to design revolutionary space instruments, such as the Gemini Observatory telescopes in Chile, the James Webb Space Telescope, and satellites for the European Space Agency.
Aderin-Pocock also regularly visits schools to educate and inspire children, particularly girls, to pursue their interest in science with her company, Science Innovation. She is known most recently for co-hosting the BBC mainstay astronomy programme The Sky at Night and having a new Barbie doll based on her.
