Contingency Plan for Exotic Notifiable and Emerging Diseases of Aquatic Animals in England and Wales 24/07/2023

Contingency plan for exotic notifiable and emerging diseases of aquatic animals in England and Wales by Defra and Welsh Government (WG).

The UK has a high aquatic animal health status compared with many regions in the world and is free of the most serious aquatic animal diseases. The Fish Health Inspectorate (FHI) applies rigorous controls on the import of species of fish and shellfish susceptible to exotic notifiable diseases to maintain this status, however contingency planning is vital to identify the actions to take in the event of an incursion.

The contingency plan describes how Defra, the Welsh Government and operational partners prepare for and respond to an exotic notifiable or emerging disease incident in fish and shellfish in England and Wales. It provides for a swift, effective and co-ordinated response to control and eradicate disease, which supports the path to regaining disease-free status, and restoring international trade.

The plan is available on GOV.UK here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/contingency-plan-for-exotic-notifiable-and-emerging-diseases-of-aquatic-animals-in-england-and-wales

Things you can do:
• Familiarise yourself and your staff with the contingency plan.
• Ensure you and your staff are aware of your responsibility to report suspicion of a listed disease to the FHI.
• Follow good biosecurity. All aquaculture production business must have an FHI approved biosecurity measures plan.
• Be compliant with the regulatory requirements for aquaculture and the keeping and movement of live fish and shellfish.

Contingency Plan for Exotic Notifiable and Emerging Diseases of Aquatic Animals in England and Wales The contingency plan outlines how Defra, Welsh Government, and their operational partners prepare for and respond to outbreaks of aquatic animal disease.

With our first confirmed case of the year it's time to remind everyone of KHV. Koi Herpesvirus disease (KHVd) is a viral disease of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and all its varieties - such as mirror, leather, ghost, koi etc. It can lead to mortality rates of up to 100%. Current water temperatures are within the range for outbreaks to occur. As always anglers can minimise the risk of KHV spread by practicing good biosecurity. Please inform the Fish Health Inspectorate (FHI) immediately (call 01305-206700) if you witness or hear of any carp mortalities. All mortality reports are investigated, and all information provided is kept anonymous. The affected carp may appear weak and/or lethargic, erratic swimming, sunken eyes and lesions/patches of dead tissue on the gills (see image). We are currently investigating multiple mortalities. The quicker we are informed, the faster we can act.
