We’ve had an influx of new followers this weekend, so I thought we’d reintroduce ourselves. I’m Holly, a first time Mama to my lovely daughter Indigo. We live by the coast, in the North East of England, with our hairy hound, Ernie.
I started Handpicked by Indie in October last year, as I wanted to help parents find brands and products we loved as first time parents. Since then, not only have we gone on to sell brands we love, but we’ve also started to sell our own handmade items. From personalised gifts to knitwear, it’s been a hoot!

You lot bloody loved the Always Eating Snacks sweatshirts. So much so, that as soon as they arrived on my doorstep, they were packed and shipped off to their new owners!

From announcing a pregnancy, or the all important ‘I’m here’, we have you covered.
Each announcement is transferred to an 100% cotton baby grow and can say pretty much whatever you please (within reason 😂). Just pop us a message to discuss what you’re after and I’ll work my magic ✨
Here we have and announcing their little bundle of joy arriving May this year. We cannot wait! This baby grow is available to buy on our store already, just add the name and date to the personalisation box and we’ll do the rest.

My beautifully, little Indie having so much fun with our water colour easel 🎨
If you have any little picassos at home, this is a must! With six different pictures to choose from, it’ll keep your little ones entertained (at least enough time for you to have a cup of tea!) I squeezed in a biscuit too 👏🏻
Also, which parent doesn’t love mess free activities?! Although messy play is important, sometimes it isn’t the most practical, for example when out and about or during travel. This little easel could be taken to a restaurant, or used during travel as the spiral pad keeps everything together and the pen uses water instead of ink. Meaning no pen marks either 😊

Pardon the L word, but we are in LOVE with our homemade valentines items.
First up we have some personalised pyjamas, perfect for your little lovebugs 🐞 Made from 100% cotton, the super soft fabric is perfect for all those extra cuddles! We also have the same style as an babygrow/sleepsuit too, so no one is left out. The text can be edited if there is something else you’d prefer it to say, just pop us a message 😊
Then next up we have the heart patterned hats😍 Handmade by Indie’s grandma, these are not to be missed! Each hat has a removable pom pom, making them easy to be chucked in the wash. As much as we love our little love bugs, they are prone to being a little sticky and messy. Here at HBI we always try to find ways to make your life easier, so washable items are a must!

One of my goals for the New Year was to include more products focused on Wellbeing.. well, here’s our first!

Happy New Year! Now.. who’s ready for summer? 🙋🏼♀️
It’s been a minute, hasn’t it? We were planning to come back inbetween Christmas and New Year, but instead enjoyed time with family and friends. How was everyone’s Christmas and New Year?
We’ve got lots of exciting plans for the shop this year and I can’t wait to share them with you all. I started the business with the idea of solely stocking brands we’ve used with Indie, or have been recommended by others. However, I quickly learnt that I really loved making my own items! We had a mix of handmade items available last year, from personalised pjs, knitted and crocheted items and decorations which were so much fun to do. So, this year we have a lot of big ideas for handmade items. The sewing machine is out in full force 😅
We’re also looking to branch out into the world of market trading, so watch this space if you’re local! 👀

Its our new brand Hex Nex! Providing you with beautifully designed muslin cloths, which also come with a little treat for you too! I know as a new Mama I was so reluctant to get anything for myself, so a purchase that doubles as a gift for both of you, seems a great compromise 😊
There are so many benefits to using muslin cloths as they have a range of different uses.
Firstly, they can be used as a swaddle and as they’re 100% bamboo, they are extremely soft on babies skin. They can also double up as a lightweight blanket, which is ideal on summer days or around the house. Baby spit up? No problem, the muslin cloth can save the day!

You probably read one post a day, probably more, regarding mental wellbeing. We have worked extremely hard to get people talking about how they’re feeling and it’s great to see it talked about so freely now. But what if we don’t know how to talk about how we feel? We might know we don’t feel good, but can’t quite pin point what that feeling is. Cue learning about emotional literacy 👋🏻
We’re quick to teach our children times tables, the alphabet and how to tie their laces. But how do we teach them about emotions? How can we raise a generation who can talk openly about how they feel and understand the feelings of others? 👏🏻 Teaching 👏🏻 emotional 👏🏻 literacy 👏🏻
Each day, or at least I try each day (hello busy mama), I’ll try and make a conversation using these emotion flashcards. In the video, we were talking about being helpful and what this means. I told Indie things I did to be helpful, to help build understanding. I know she’s only 14 months but it’s never too early to start!
It can be an easy end of day activity, to ask a child to pick a card explaining how they’ve felt that day, or for you to explain how you’ve been feeling. There’s nothing better than modelling our own thoughts and feelings to normalise this with children. You could even use the cards as prompts for a bed time story. For example, choose the brave bear card and make a story about what he did to be brave. Educational and creative 👏🏻

I’ve been there 😅 The countless lists and searching for THE BEST items, but also products that aren’t going to require you to re-mortgage your house. Let us help! In store we have a fantastic range of items for newborns. In this video we have:
• Crinkly cloth sensory book, which is perfect for tummy time. Did you know you can start tummy time at 0-3 months?
• Hat and bo**ie set. Newborns are at risk of having abnormally low body temperature, so skin to skin contact and keeping them wrapped up after is imperative to help regulate this.
• Bella knitted doll. Perfect for snuggling and the ready made best friend for your little one. Although we do advise that cuddly toys are kept out of the cot until around 1 year old.
• Knitted by us, dinosaur blanket. This is one our favourites, as Indie had the exact same blanket as a newborn 🥰 We used it in her Moses basket and car seat to keep her snuggly. She still has it in the car now at 14 months old! Available in a range of colours upon request.
• A-Z of positive emotions, nursery print. It’s never too early to introduce emotional literacy into your little one’s life. The print has an animal with each word/letter, so little one can familiarise themselves with wildlife too.
• Animal face playmat. The playmats are the perfect size for playing, tummy time and learning to do that first roll. The ears can be pulled (or more likely chewed) by little ones and the mats are available as a lion or rabbit.

Okay it’s not really a secret that play is important, but do you know why? I think it’s easy to forget that play has many benefits, other than just being fun. We can be quick to give children our own version of educational activities, which usually is in the form of academic work. Although these activities are important, what if I told you that children’s play is just as important?
Why?
- Children learn about the world around them. They learn to make sense of how things work and how to navigate around their environment. Role play can help with this. For example, playing shops will help a child understand what to do in that environment and the langauge associated with that.
- They learn to problem solve. Have you ever watched a child playing with something in their own way, then figure out how to use the toy as intended? That’s problem solving. They learn skills to get past obstacles, which is crucial for later life.
- From the above two points mentioned, children develop confidence. What does confidence do? Allows them to push their skills further and achieve more! This can also promote positive self-esteem.
- Play can also help children develop social skills. They learn how to interact with other children or adults, by observing facial expressions, body language and other interactions. It can also help them learn how to take turns, which they usually fully understand by around age 3.
There are several other reasons why play is important, but I don’t want to keep you all day. The main point is that play is just as important as academic work, if not more! Without the skills learnt through play it is almost impossible to complete academic work. How will they do that without problem solving skills, confidence or social skills?
