- 31 May 1916 – The Battle of Jutland commenced.
The Battle of Jutland, fought between May 31 and June 1, 1916, was the largest naval battle of World War I.
It took place in the North Sea, near the coast of Denmark's Jutland Peninsula, which both the British and German navies sought to control. The battle involved the British Royal Navy's Grand Fleet, commanded by Admiral Sir John Jellicoe, and the Imperial German Navy's High Seas Fleet, led by Vice-Admiral Reinhard Scheer.
The stage was set for a confrontation of unprecedented scale.
As the two fleets converged, the battle began with a series of skirmishes and tactical exchanges. Over the course of the battle there were periods of intense action and inaction. The result was a protracted engagement, characterized by fierce gun duels and torpedo attacks.
Over 36 brutal hours, around 100,000 British and German sailors in 250 warships fought for control. The battle reached its climax during the late afternoon and evening of May 31, as both fleets unleashed devastating barrages of gunfire at close range.
During the battle 25 ships sank and more than 8,500 men lost their lives.
In the aftermath, both sides claimed victory, yet the strategic stalemate persisted. While the British retained control of the North Sea, the German fleet remained a potent threat, capable of striking at vital shipping lanes and disrupting Allied operations.

A very special RBLI installation on Stone Beach in Broadstairs as we reflect on the upcoming D-Day 80th anniversary.
Created using 80 Tommies etched in the sand - one for each year since the D-Day landings – this emotive installation was in place for just a few short hours until the poignant moment that the tide came in and washed away the silhouettes; depicting all those who departed British shores never to return. They were fortunate enough to share this moment with some inspirational veterans.
This is the first of their commemorative D-Day programme so look out for other RBLI activity between now and 6th June.
To commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day on 6 June, RNRM charity have created a special place for you to pay tribute to them - or anyone involved in the war effort during World War 2.

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal paid a special visit to the Historic Ships workshop and HMS Victory at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, during her visit on Thursday 9 May 2024. HRH was joined by Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, Trustee of the HMS Victory Preservation Company, to see HMS Victory’s team of shipwrights and conservators at work on the 258 year old ship.
HRH experienced this conservation live, as part of the once-in-a-lifetime Big Repair project. HRH met our incredible teams fighting to protect her and got to see her as never before by climbing aboard the scaffold that encases her in this unique and groundbreaking experience.
Matthew Sheldon, Interim Director General of the National Museum of the Royal Navy, added: “It was such a privilege to host Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, onboard HMS Victory. We are very proud of the ground breaking work that our team of scientists, conservationists and shipwrights are putting into the Big Repair. What we’re learning here will benefit other conservation projects across the UK and beyond. We hope Her Royal Highness thoroughly enjoyed the experience.”
