A HUGE thank you to the Chobham Carnival for having us back this year and for yours and the local community's continued support for our dancers! We are incredibly grateful and look forward to coming back next year!

RECORD May Ball proceeds have enabled the carnival association to donate more than it expected – over £5,000 – to good causes.
Non-stop rain on carnival day reduced the event’s takings but this year’s dinner dance in the village hall the previous Saturday raised several thousands of pounds, eclipsing previous years’ profits.
This enabled 20 organisations to receive grants from the association’s 2024 allocation.
“The carnival wasn’t a washout, despite the terrible weather, but there wasn’t a financial surplus,” said association chairman Tim Elwin. “However, the ball was a spectacular success, enabling us to distribute around the usual amount of money.
“We had a record attendance, and some fantastic lots were donated for the auctions. Many generous businesses supported us by giving valuable items to be sold. There were also attractive donations for the raffle.”
The largest good-cause grant, £500, went to Chobham Army Cadets, who help marshal the carnival procession and run the fete’s coconut shy. The money will help fund group activities and outings.
The other grants went to: the recently formed Chobham amateur dramatics group (£320); St Lawrence Friends Heritage Trust (£300); Friends of St Lawrence School (£300): St Lawrence Primary School (£300); Jackanory Pre-school (£300); Chobham Agricultural and Horticultural Society (£300) SV Elite Dance Studios (£300).
Woking High School (£250) Chobham Museum (£250); Chobham Festival (£250) Chobham Parish Council (£250); Chobham Scout Group (£250); Quest Riding for the Disabled (£250); Chobham Care (£250); Friends of Valley End School (£250).
Surrey and Woking District RSPCA (£200); West Byfleet Guides and Brownies £250); Woking and Sam Beare Hospice boutique in Chobham (£100); Chobham Country Market (£50).

EIGHTEEN organisations are benefiting from the money raised for good causes at this year’s carnival events.
Just under £5,000 has been distributed – with grants ranging from a contribution to buying candles for the village church to support for a dance school that won gold for England at a world cup.
Carnival association chairman Tim Elwin said the total raised was less than the spectacular £8,359 distributed last year but had returned to pre-COVID levels.
“In 2022, we were able to hold both a carnival and a ball for the first since 2019 and people were pleased to come out after months of restrictions on their entertainment and outings,” he added. “Nevertheless, we were delighted with the total we are able to give out this year to deserving community groups and charities.”
Five organisations each received £400. They include Woking-based Street Vibes Dance School, which sent 39 pupils to in medals for England at the Dance World Cup in Spain in June. Many of the team staged a display in the carnival arena on 1 May.
The other £400 grants went to carnival performers Prime Acrobatics (pictured), Chobham Village Hall, St Lawrence Primary School and Chobham Army Cadets.
Three applicants received £300 – Chobham Festival, Chobham Agricultural and Horticultural Society and St Lawrence Friends Heritage Trust, which supports the maintenance of the two village churches.
Grants of £250 went to Woking and District RSPCA branch, Chobham Museum, Quest Riding for the Disabled Association and Chobham and District Lawn Tennis Club.
Chobham Recreation Ground Charitable Trust received the full £204 cost of replacing the battery in the defibrillator that is available for emergency use at the Parish Pavilion.
The Friends of Valley End School and Chobham Scout Group each received £200, Chobham Country Market got a £170 grant and St Lawrence Church received £150 towards buying new candles.
Finally, the Woking and Sam Beare Hospices charity boutique in Chobham – which dresses the carnival king and queen – received £100 towards the cost of new clothes rails.
“Many of the organisations that receive grants support the carnival through running stalls at the fete, being in the procession or providing some fantastic entertainment,” said Tim. “We are particularly please to be able to help them financially.”

It's carnival day! Come along and enjoy a great day out for all the family. Entrance to the showground in Station Road is free but we ask for a cash donation on the gate – whatever you can afford.
A principal aim of the carnival is to make donations from the proceeds to charities and good causes, so we need the help of carnival-goers to do that. And, of course, donations help pay the next year's expenses.
There are activities and entertainments right through the day, from when the procession sets off at 11.30am to 5pm and beyond.
