Sometimes it is easy to forget that Share is a food waste charity and we work solely with donations from local suppliers and stores collecting their end of day and surplus stocks.
This does mean that the volume of our supply fluctuates- this is great for the suppliers as they have less food waste but for those that come to our sites it does mean there may not be the same array of choice and quantity we have at other times.
This week is one of those weeks SO we kindly ask if you are purely attending Share to help reduce food waste then please come towards the end of the session.
If you have already visited a Share site this week, we would prefer you did not attend a second site when we are at low stock levels, those that do attend a second site will be asked to wait until others have made their selection.
We really appreciate your understanding and co-operation with this.
We love the team Sedero Lounge who are great at supporting local groups and charities!

Volunteer week has just finished and - some would say as usual! - we are a bit late in commenting on it!!
Share is a 100% volunteer charity, across our 15 sites it takes a group of almost 300 people to collect, sort, set up and distribute the food we have to over 700 households (that can be up to 2000 people every week!)
Simply put we would not operate without the time and effort the team put into it so from the bottom of our hearts we want to say a huge thank you!!
Great day today at the Woodley Carnival! Thank you to all the volunteers who helped (on a Saturday!!) and also to the new mayor for Woodley Town Council, Juliet Anderson, for selecting us as her charity of the year!

Where did we come from?
At the start of the Covid 19 situation the Grub Club team were approached to offer their expertise in the area of food supply to families in Wokingham – conversations were had and meetings held about who might need help and how we could address it. Due to the ongoing relationship with the Grub Club Team and core members of JAC (Just Around the Corner) we pulled our resources and contacts and were able to access a lot of surplus stock from BRAKES in Reading – stock that, due to the sudden cancellation of orders for the hospitality industry, would otherwise have gone in the bin.
We also reached out to local supermarkets such as Morrisons and Waitrose and through the connections with Wokingham In Need we were also able to access items from Marks and Spencer and Lidl. Cook In Wokingham also got on board with the project and kindly donate 50 ready meals a week during the pandemic. We have received great support from a somewhat unlikely source in Reading Football Club too as well as many other individuals and other contacts. As a result of the partnerships which have been made we have been able to supply food parcels for up to 100 families a week at times, this does not account for the number of people who come to collect food items at the church and these are separate to the Foodbank referrals. The contacts for the food parcels have come through various schools, individuals and other groups. We have also arranged the purchase and packing of around 50 fresh fruit and vegetable parcels for the local food bank each week. Since the start of Covid we have produced over 1500 food parcels between the Wokingham Community Hub, the Foodbank and direct contacts. The majority of the items we have are donated however with the financial donations we receive we are able to put this back into the project and purchase items that we require.
Share- Wokingham has been open daily to anyone who can come along to Norreys Church, offering bakery items and any other surplus food stock we have – there is no charge for this but if people are able to make a donation, however small, it is always appreciated. This means it does not carry the stigma attached to going to the Foodbank as people are not just being able to feed themselves for little to no money but they are also having an environmental impact in tackling the was issue.
Having the church open during this difficult time has meant that the current relationships that we had made within the community have been maintained however it has also allowed us to build new relationships too and understand issues that these individuals may be facing. As a result of these discussions we have been able to signpost to other charities and support networks in the local area. As the pandemic has continued the needs of those that we support have changed, initially it was people who were shielding and unable to get out and now we are really seeing the economic impact, job losses and financial woes have meant that people are struggling - that is where we can support.
