Sound Monsters had such a fab day yesterday at the Mikeys Wish Apraxia Awareness event in Manchester. It was a really inspiring day & and it was great to meet so many like-minded people focused on raising the profile of SLCN and fighting for more support.

I couldn't have done it without the wonderful Kirsty from Summer Hill who supported me throughout in so many ways! I'm very grateful to have had her represent Sound Monsters with me- as she is such a HUGE part of my business journey! So, huge thank you Kirsty- for always being my biggest supporter and for all of your amazing help!

SATS WEEK- MENTAL HEALTH WEEK ❤️

I think it's rather fitting that has coincided with KS2 SATs week- The pressure of SATs can cause many worries for our children, which is why it's so important to teach the importance of acknowledging our feelings and talking about them.

Good luck to everyone doing tests this week, REMEMBER- Exams are NOT for everyone, they are NOT an accurate reflection of all that you are and what you are capable of ❤️

🐝🍯 Beehive Final Consonants 🐝🍯

Missing off final consonants in words is a common speech error. Here, we practised listening out for the FINAL sound in the words- beaT/beeP/beaK and used the tweezers to put a bee on the final sound we heard. The child and I both took turns saying the words for eachother, & I had The Phonies and Vowelies on hand to break down the words to help her.

💙💙Apraxia awareness month💙💙

Apraxia of speech (also known as verbal dyspraxia) is a neurological disorder that affects speech. It is a motor disorder that can make it difficult to coordinate the movements needed to speak.

Some studies suggest 1-2 children in every 1000 may have verbal dyspraxia- despite this, it is largely unheard of in education.

I'm super excited to be attending The Apraxia awareness day on the 1st of June to raise more awareness of Apraxia, and support more access to speech and language therapy.

🏁🏎Speech sound discrimination - Click-clack-track 🏎🏁

This child was very interested in our Click-clack-track, so we incorporated it into our speech sound session. We worked on the /k/, /t/ and /s/ sounds, and used our Phonie cards to support.

🌈🌈 Autism Awareness Event 🌈🌈 at a mainstream primary academy.

I had the absolute pleasure of helping Beth Rice organise an Autism Awareness event at our primary school to raise funds for the National Autistic Society
Beth worked tirelessly to plan, secure raffle prizes and make sure the day was successful!

There was a MEGA sweet sale, raffle (with prizes of a Sound Monster sensory lanyard, sensory toys and lego sets), all children came to school dressed in bright colours and I created a PowerPoint to be shared with the pupils.

The PowerPoint introduced neurodiversity and encouraged discussion around our strengths and difficulties, and what the world would look like if we were all the same.

There has been some amazing feedback, and I am so happy I got to be a part of making our autistic pupils voices heard.

Beth- you were absolutely incredible, I am so proud of you.

Of all the resources I have made, this one is my absolute favourite!

Following "traditional" listening rules can be difficult for some children. Some may need to move to regulate, some find eye contact uncomfortable, some may struggle to filter out background noise. Teaching children that listening means eye contact, sitting still and being silent can lead neurodiverse students to mask their natural behaviours and lead to burnout and mental health difficulties.

I created these listening rules to teach all children that listening looks different to everyone and promote a more inclusive classroom ❤️
