A scene of yesteryear on the Ouse Bridge in York

A traffic jammed Ouse Bridge in York

Daniel Defoe, in his Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Britain described the original as ‘near 70 foot in diameter; it is, without exception, the greatest in England, some say it’s as large as the Rialto at Venice, though I think not.’

There were about fifty shops, a prison or kidcote, a town hall and a hospital on the bridge and from 1367 England ’s first public toilets are reputed to have opened here (issuing into the river): ‘the place on Owsbridge callyd the pyssing howes’. Agnes Gretehede was paid two shillings a year to keep them clean in 1544.

The present Ouse Bridge was built between 1810 and 1821.

Constantine the Great: The Roman Emperor with a Yorkshire Connection

The Emperor and the City
Constantine the Great, a name that echoes through early history, is a figure of immense significance in the narrative of one of Britain's most Roman-influenced cities - York. The bronze statue of Constantine, crafted by Philip Jackson, stands proudly outside the Minster, his broken sword a symbol of his enduring legacy. But there's more to this story than just a statue.

The Rise of an Emperor
In AD 305, Constantius, Constantine's father, ascended to the throne as the Roman Emperor. His reign, however, was short-lived. After launching a successful campaign against the Picts beyond the Antonine Wall, he met an untimely death in Eboracum, the Roman name for York, in 306. But before his demise, Constantius recommended his son to the influential Roman army as his successor. Consequently, Constantine was declared emperor by the legions in York, marking the beginning of a new era in Roman history.

The Triumph of the Church
Constantine's reign was not just significant for his military and political achievements. He also played a pivotal role in the religious transformation of the Roman Empire. Constantine was the first Roman Emperor to adopt the Christian faith, marking the beginning of the end of the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire. This period is often referred to as the Triumph of the Church, the Peace of the Church, or the Constantinian Shift.

In 313, Constantine and Licinius issued the Edict of Milan, which decriminalised Christian worship throughout the Roman Empire. This marked the arrival of religious tolerance, albeit of a sort, in the empire.

The Legacy of Constantine
Constantine died in York in 337, leaving behind a legacy that would shape the course of history. His influence is still felt in York today, with his statue serving as a reminder of the city's rich Roman heritage.

If you're interested in delving deeper into the history of York and its connection with Constantine the Great, consider checking out the book "History of York: 101 People, Objects, Places" available now.

This book offers a fascinating exploration of York's history, from its Roman roots to its present-day charm.

York's Hospitium

People often ask what this building was, and is. A splendid 14th-century half-timbered building in Museum Gardens, it was probably designed both as a guest house for ‘lower rank’ visitors to the nearby St Mary’s Abbey (merchants for example) and as a warehouse for goods for the abbey, conveniently unloaded from the river nearby. Its name derives from our ‘hospitality’, rather than ‘hospital’ and, as noted, was built as a place to house and feed visiting pilgrims. The Hospitium originally formed part of a group of buildings in the abbey grounds.

Over the years it has had a number of different uses. You may have visited for an event or wedding. Have you been inside?
