Why we need highly protected marine areas

Help bring our seas back to life!!

The Government is asking for your thoughts on whether to introduce Highly Protected Marine Areas in English waters, so we need your help by the 30th October to make these a reality.

These areas will have a higher level of protection and form part of our Marine Protected Area network. Highly Protected Marine Areas allow marine habitats to recover and wildlife to flourish and spill over into surrounding seas.

Catsharks
These beautiful creatures are small spotted catsharks (also known as lesser spotted dogfish) and are one of many #shark species living in UK waters. If you've ever found a mermaids purse with curly tendrils at each corner then this is the animal that produced it! #NationalMarineWeek (c) Andy Jackson/SubseaTV

National Marine Week!
It's National Marine Week! Between July 27th and August 11th, come and join us for an adventure on a coastline near you to explore to weird and wonderful world of marine creatures that call our #NorthSea home!

ROV
We've been on the coast 'road testing' some new technology in the form of this Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) with in built camera. We hope that this piece of tech will help us learn much more about our sea bed and its condition so we can better protect our seas & its wildlife.

Seabirds at Flamborough
Kittiwakes are our most sea-loving gull, only turning up inland on odd occasions and spending winter out on the Atlantic. They eat fish, shrimps and worms, and do not scavenge at landfill sites like other gulls. Can you spot their nests on the cliff face? https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/wildlife-explorer/birds/seabirds/kittiwake

Solar powered sea slug
Looks a bit like a common garden snail doesnt he? This is in fact the solar powered sea slug. Its often a bright green in colour, or even red or brown with tiny irridescent spots - its body colour is dictated by its diet! Scientists believe that this slug retains the cells from the algae it eats as solar panels using them for photosynthesis to provide it with food, just like a plant! #LoveWildlife

Feeling blue?
Feeling blue? So is this sea mouse! Despite its name, this strange furry creature often found washed ashore after storms is actually a kind of worm! At the fringes of its body are beautiful iridescent bristles which shimmer blue, green and gold. The sea mouse is an active predator, hunting small crabs and other worms on the seabed. #LoveWildlife #BlueMonday #FeelingNotSoBlue! (c) Andy Jackson- SubseaTV

Common prawn
#DYK common prawns can propel themselves backwards quickly by flexing the muscles of their abdomen and tail, or swim forward more slowly using the appendages on the underside of their tail! #FunFact #NationalMarineWeeks

Tompot Blenny
