Gundonaa Hajia Samata Abudu is the Paramount woman Chief of the Dagbon traditional area in the Northern Region of Ghana. All women Chiefs in that area are subordinate to her. She heads the Gundogu skin, the female equivalent of the Yendi skin, which is headed by the Yaa-Naa. The Gundonaa is the only Chief, be it male or female, who is able to veto the Yaa-Naa's word.

Last year, Mothertongue contributed to the editing of the novel INFINITE ROOTS by Mary Bodomo.
This autobiographical novel follows the multi-generational story of a Ghanaian military family, composed through the eyes of a young daughter learning about her history and culture through the many stories of her parents and elders. This autobiographical novel spreads out across 1960s to 1980s Ghana as the military family journeys from Wa to Tamale to Accra to Kumasi to Takoradi to Ho and more. As the young girl grows, she also begins to share her own re-tellings as her elders once did.
A rich archive of Dagaare language and culture, as well as Ghanaian history!

Editing this novel taught me uncountable details of local Dagaare language and culture, as well as Ghanaian history in those days. It is an immense treasure to have this rich archive of our culture.
Can't wait for you to read it.
Great write-up from Northern Heritage 🙏🏿✨

MOTHERTONGUE in collaboration with OBL Studios, is working to give their audience a short film "In Search of Yennenga" as a teaser for Nuotama Bodoma's work-in-progress "Yennenga: A Warrior in Her Becoming".
Yennenga was a legendary princess, considered the mother of the Mossi people of Burkina Faso. She was a famous warrior, precious to her father. But the princess aspired to another destiny and decided to leave the kingdom. On the run with her horse, she meets a young hunter, Rialé, with whom she has a child called Ouedraogo. Ouedraogo is a famous last name in Burkina Faso and means "male horse" in honor of the horse that leads the princess to Rialé. Yennenga or her son Ouedraogo are considered the founders of the Mossi Kingdoms.
"In Search of Yennenga" will feature African Afropop singer-songwriter, Wiyaala, who will wear a reimagined Retro-Futuristic Warrior costume from the Mabia Empire. And walk around Tamale and ask the people.
"Have you seen Yennenga?"
The responses and reactions of the people documented in the visuals will be shown as part of the trailer. It aims to depict the noble female warrior in the place of women and girls in Tamale today.
Yennenga: A Warrior in Her Becomeing is a re-telling of the Yennenga Legend to fit modern society. In this story, a warrior from the Mabia Empire comes back to 2020s Tamale from the year 3000 in search of the girl who will become the founding mother of her nation.
NB: Mabia - the name of the collective languages of Northern Ghana and some in Burkina Faso.
Thank you Wiyaala! It was such an honour to work with you 🦁✨🔥
