MODERNA AND PFIZER COVID -19 VACCINES ARE NOW SAFE FOR PREGNANT WOMEN. DR. ABDULAI ABUKARI DISCLOSED.

The North East Regional Director of Health Service Dr Abdulai Abukari has assured the pregnant women in the region that as per the new policy guidelines on the COVID-19 Vaccination, Moderna and Pfizer Vaccines have been approved for their use. He made this known at a stakeholders (Members of Public Health Emergency Management Committee) and the media engagement meeting on COVID-19 National Immunization Days Campaign in the North East region at the Conference Hall of the Regional Coordinating Council on Friday, 04th February, 2022.
The Regional Director of Health Service in his address stated that there was sufficient stock of COVID-19 vaccines in the region and so all stakeholders should be ambassadors for awareness creation of the campaign to make it a success. He entreated all members of the Regional Public Health Emergency Management Committee, the Media, Chiefs, Queen Mothers, Pastors, Imams, the Security Agencies, Heads of Senior High Schools in the region to support the Ghana Health Service in ensuring that all eligible persons get vaccinated.
He further indicated that the COVID-19 vaccines are available in all the Health Facilities and Vaccination Posts in the region from Wednesday 2nd to Sunday, 6th February 2022 for all eligible persons aged 15 years and above as well as for all pregnant women.
The Regional EPI Coordinator Mr Iddrisu in a short presentation indicated that the regional targeted population under this campaign was 52,015 and that so far regional coverage was 31.8% at the end of Day 2 of the campaign.
The Deputy Director Administration of the Regional Health Directorate Mr. Mohammed Yakubu on his part urged the media personnel who were present at the meeting to support the campaign by ensuring that the messages given at the meeting were disseminated widely across the length and breadth of the region. The Deputy Director for Public Health Dr. Moses Barima Djimatey in his contribution informed the members of the committee that with the new policy on the COVID-19 Vaccinations, it was now possible for persons who had received Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 Vaccines as the first dose to be given either of these two vaccines for the second dose.
On his part the Municipal Coordinating Director for East Mamprusi Mr. Chimsi Musah who chaired the function pledged on behalf of all the Municipal/District Assemblies in the region to use their outfits to support the campaign. He therefore called on the general public to visit the nearest vaccination centres and get vaccinated since the COVID-19 Vaccines received by Ministry of Health were safe, effective and help to prevent severe disease and hospitalization. He thanked the North East Regional Health Directorate and the entire staff of Ghana Health Service in the region for making the vaccine available to the people.

LET’S ALL GET VACCINATED BECAUSE NONE OF US HERE IS SAFE UNTIL ALL OF US ARE SAFE IN THIS ERA OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC- DR. ABDULAI ABUKARI ADVISED RESIDENTS OF THE NORTH EAST REGION.

The Regional Director of Health Service for North East Region- Dr. Abdulai Abukari has advised residents of the North East Region to take COVID-19 vaccination seriously. He emphasized the commitment of Government of Ghana through Ministry of Health/Ghana Health Service in ensuring that no eligible citizen was left unvaccinated with December being declared by the President of the Republic as the COVID-19 Vaccination month.
This was said when he was addressing the members of Regional Public Health Emergency Management Committee and Media Engagement on COVID-19 Vaccination status in the North East Region at the Conference Hall of the Regional Coordinating Council on Tuesday December 22, 2021.
He stated that the number of COVID-19 cases recorded in the region since the outbreak of the Pandemic stood at 283 cases out of which 11 people lost their lives but currently there was no active case in the region. The Director in his address indicated the availability of the COVID-19 vaccine in sufficient quantities in the region and therefore made a passionate appeal to those who have not yet taken the vaccine to get vaccinated. He further noted that Government has made the vaccine free and therefore no one should pay for it in the region. He also noted that, all the various types of the COVID-19 vaccines in the country were protective and therefore called on all citizens to make it their civic duty and responsibility of getting vaccinated as well as being ambassadors to ensure that all their love ones who are eligible and not yet vaccinated do so.
According to Dr Abdulai the COVID-19 Vaccination in the region started in March 2021 when the region took delivery of 6,500 doses of AstraZeneca and the main target was the Healthcare workers including students of the College of Nursing and Midwifery in Nalerigu as Frontliners in the fight against COVID-19. And in April, 2021 the region took another delivery of 2000 doses of the same AstraZeneca for the general public and in June 2021, the region again took another delivery of 700 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine for the enumerators of the National Population and Housing Census exercise.

Dr Abdulai said the next COVID-19 vaccines received by the region was in August which was about 7,040 doses of AstraZeneca and 500 doses of Jansen and Jansen (J&J). He revealed that this was the first consignment of COVID-19 vaccines officially directed to vaccinate the general public unlike the previous ones which were targeted at some selected Population groups. The Director further indicated that the region received a total of 63,080 doses of COVID-19 Vaccines from September to November this year for the general public. With December being declared as the month of COVID-19 Vaccination, the region has so far received a total of 75,262 doses of COVID-19 vaccine made up of 12,000 doses of AstraZeneca, 43,200 doses of Jansen and Jansen, 13,902 doses of Pfizer and 6,160 doses of Moderna for the month alone.
The Regional Director further stated that the next targeted population to be vaccinated are the students of the Senior High Schools with the Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine which is currently in the Region.
The Regional Director finally stressed on the need for all resident who are eligible to come out in their numbers for the vaccination as well as continue adhering to the COVID-19 Preventive Protocols by regular wearing of the face mask, social distancing and regular hand washing. He therefore reminded the residents that :“NONE OF US HERE IS SAFE UNTILL ALL OF US ARE SAFE IN THIS ERA OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC”.

NORTH EAST REGIONAL HEALTH DIRECTORATE OF GHANA HEALTH SERVICE RECEIVED A DONATED TOYOTA LANDCRUISER FROM WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME
The North East Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service have received a donated slightly used Toyota Landcruiser from the World Food Programme (WFP) to support the Nutrition Unit of the Public Health Department of the Directorate. The donation took place on Monday the 20th of December 2021 at the WFP office in Tamale. In presenting the vehicle, the Programme Policy Officer/Officer Incharge of the WFP Tamale Sub-office Mad. Gyamila Abdul-Wahabi indicated that their gesture was in response to the Health Directorate request to them to support the unit for their monitoring and supervisory activities in the region. She further indicated that the Vehicle was valued at 24,667.39 USA Dollars (151,211.00 Ghana Cedis) and therefore urged the Directorate to put the vehicle into good use and indicated WFP willingness to continue with the collaboration with the Directorate towards the successful implementation of their Programmes in the region as well as achieving the Nutrition related health indicators.
The Regional Director of Health Service of North East Region Dr. Abdulai Abukari on his part thanked WFP for their kind gesture. He indicated that the vehicle will be put into good use and for its intended purpose. He also assured WFP of good maintenance to ensure that the vehicle last long. The Director further applauded the WFP for the good collaboration and partnership that exist between his office and WFP. He noted further that, this was the second time that his office was receiving donations from WFP. Earlier in the year, the Directorate received a Laptop Computer and a Printer from WFP to support the Nutrition unit of the Directorate. Dr. Abdulai Abukari used the occasion to make an appeal to other stakeholders to support Government efforts towards the provision of quality health service to the good people of North East Region through similar donations to the Regional Health Directorate to facilitate their work.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING HEALTH SERVICE DELIVERY IN THE NORTH EAST REGION, DR. ABDULAI ABUKARI TO HUNGARIAN AMBASSADOR.

The Regional Director of Health Service for the North East Region Dr. Abdulai Abukari has expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the Government and people of Hungary through the Hungarian Ambassador to Ghana H. E Mr. Tamas Feher for supporting the Catholic Diocese of Navrongo-Bolgatanga to put up a magnificent Out Patient Department (OPD) Block for St. Joseph The Worker Health Centre in Guabliga in the West Mamprusi Municipal.
He was addressing the chiefs and people of Guabliga during the blessing and handing over of the new Out Patient Department (OPD) block to St. Joseph the Worker Health Centre at Guabliga in the West Mamprusi Municipality in the North East Region on Thursday December 16, 2021.
According to him this would go down in the history of St. Joseph the Worker Health Centre and indeed the Catholic Diocese of Navrongo-Bolgatanga as a memorable one because the New OPD block will help improve the delivery of quality health care to the people of Guabuliga and it's environs.
Dr Adulai further stated that the limited space which was used as the OPD unit at the facility have been one of the facility's major headache over the years. He thanked the Ambassador for leaving his busy schedules and came all the way to participate in the handing over of this magnificent OPD block. The Regional Director further noted that this was not the first visit to the region this year by H.E Mr. Tamas Feher. The Hungarian Ambassorder earlier in July this year visited Wulugu which is another community in the West Mamprusi Municipal where a similar OPD block was handed over to the St. Patrick Health Centre with each of the two OPD. Blocks costing over GHC 200,000.00 courtesy of the Hungary Helps Agency with funding from the Hungarian Government.
On the part of Ghana Health Service, the Regional Director assure the leadership of the Diocese of seconding more health professionals to the facility towards to improve on Health Service Delivery in the catchment area. He therefore appealled to the chiefs and people of Guabuliga to continue supporting the Health Staff with accommodation facilities so they can stay and render Health Services to the community members.
Dr. Abdulai also praised the Catholic Church for demonstrating that with Faith and Action the church can achieve Great Results that will put smiles on the faces of the community members. Whilst thanking the Catholic Dioceses and the donors he appealled for more collaboration and support in the quest to move Health Service Delivery in the region to another level. "As Central Government is doing its part to support Health Service Delivery in our newly created region, we also humbly want to appeal to H. E. Mr. Tamas Feher and indeed to all gathered here to continue with your support especially in the area of Transport among others"- The Health Director stated.
On his part the Ambassador for Hungary H. E. Mr. Tamas Feher stated that the most significant Hungary Helps projects in this part of Ghana are carried out through the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Catholic Diocese Development Organization in the area of Education and Health Infrastructure Development within the North Eastern part of Ghana. These developmental projects according to the Ambassador is estimated at a total cost of 300.000 USD which is the donation from the Hungary Helps Program. According to him the program would carried out into three main projects:

The first was the establishment of two rural OutPatient centres in Wulugu and Guabuliga. Previously, there were only very small OPD facilities in the two underdeveloped areas, with very poorly equipped health services. The new OPD blocks for the Health Centres will help improve the working conditions for the health professionals to better take care of their patients.

The second project was supporting 20 Primary and Junior High Schools in difficult situation with 1,500 school mono-desks. These schools had no benches before, so students had to study on the floor.

The third project was the provision of training and start-up microcredit facility for the acquisition of basic entrepreneurial knowledge and skills for around 1000 rural women from 10 poor local communities in Binduri and Zebilla, to improve the livelihoods of families and the food supply in the region.

The Bishop of Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocese of the Catholic Church- Most Rev. Alfred Agyenta on his part thanked the Hungary Helps for their support and ensuring that the development of health service delivery through providing infrastructure in the two health facilities in the region.
He appealled to the Ghana Health Service to collaborate with the Diocese to improve quality health service delivery. He added that the church was not in competition with Government and for that matter the Ghana Health Service.
Most Rev. Alfred Agyenta finally use the occasion to appealled to Government through the MCE for West Mamprusi Municipal to fix the Guabuliga Walewale road which some portions were washed away by the heavy flood that hit the region last year.
The Regional Director finally stressed on the need for all to get vaccinated and continue adhering to the COVID-19 Preventive Protocols by regular wearing of the face mask, social distancing and regular hand washing since NONE OF US HERE IS SAFE UNTILL ALL OF US ARE SAFE IN THIS ERA OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC.

NORTH EAST REGIONAL MINISTER COMMEND CHINA-AID AND UNICEF FOR SUPPORTING HEALTH SERVICE DELIVERY IN THE REGION.

The North East Regional Minister Hon Yidana Zakaria on Wednesday 2nd November 2021 commissioned a NEWBORN CARE UNIT at Binde Hospital in the Bunkprugu Nakpaduri District of the North East Region. The state-of-the-art facility was engineered by the Ghana Health Service with support from UNICEF and funded by China –Aid.
The Minister commended the CHINA-AID and UNICEF team for the immense support to address the health and nutrition challenges in the region since the beginning of the year.
To him it’s important to note that before the establishment of these New born Care Units, all the four major hospitals in the region have been referring new born babies with Health problems such as Birth Asphyxia, Neonatal Jaundice, Neonatal Sepsis, Preterm Babies, Babies with low birth weight and others to the Tamale Teaching Hospital which is about 3 to 4 hours journey from Nalerigu the North East Regional Capital. As a result of these challenges associated with travelling to Tamale coupled with other difficulties, most mothers are reluctant to go resulting in undesirable outcomes for these new born babies.
The new facility is expected to accommodate and ensure the safety of newly born babies within the region.
Inaugurating the facility, the Minister commended China- Aid/UNICEF Ghana and Ghana Health Service for the Hospital with this modern edifice Newborn Care Unit and appealed to them to take good care of the facility.
He also appealed to UNICEF Ghana and other Non-Governmental organizations to support more of these life-saving facilities to other health facilities within the Region.

FOUR HOSPITALS IN THE NORTH EAST REGION GETS NEWBORN CARE UNIT FROM CHINA – AID/UNICEF SUPPORT

The Regional Director of Health Service for North East Region Dr. Abdulai Abukari commended the CHINA-AID and UNICEF team for their immense support in addressing the health and nutrition challenges in the Region. The support came under a project named: ‘Fighting COVID-19 by Providing Health and Nutrition Services to Women and Children in North East Region’
He made this remarkable commendation when he addressed the Chiefs and People of Binde in the Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri District during the commissioning of one of the four New Born Care Units in the Region at the Binde Hospital on the Tuesday November 02, 2021. Other Hospitals which have benefitted from this support are Walewale Municipal Hospital, Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu and Chereponi Government Hospital. This according to the Director, will help improve upon the quality of health service delivery especially for newborns in the Region. He indicated that prior to the establishment of these Newborn Care Units, the beneficiary Hospitals have been referring newborn babies with health problems such as Birth Asphyxia, Neonatal Jaundice, Neonatal Sepsis, Preterm Babies, Babies with low birth weight and others to the Tamale Teaching Hospital which is about 3 to 4 hours journey. As a result of the challenges associated with travelling to Tamale coupled with other difficulties, most mothers have been reluctant to accept referrals resulting in undesirable outcomes for these new born babies.
Dr. Abdulai further stressed on the objectives of the Project which is still running as increasing the effective coverage of key evidence-based health and nutrition interventions to mitigate the effects of COVID-19 pandemic on Maternal New-born, & Child Health and Nutrition (MNCHN) services in the Region. He further noted that the Project was timely because it came when the new regions like North East had started functioning and needed all the support it could get to equipped them perform.
He also used the opportunity to outline some of the challenges facing the Health Service delivery in the Region especially in the area of Transportation, (inadequate Motorbikes for CHPS zones to enhance Health Service Delivery and Utility vehicles such as pickups for the Regional Health Directorate). The Director made a passionate appeal to UNICEF, the CHINA-AID once again and other Development Partners to support them in that regard.
The Regional Director on behalf of the Ghana Health Service and Women and children who are the beneficiaries of the Project thanked CHINA-AID and UNICEF for their massive support and contribution towards Health Service Delivery in the Region. The Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, Dr. Abdul-Rauf Sulemana on behalf of the hospital management expressed his gratitude to CHINA-AID/UNICEF for the establishment of the New born Unit for the hospital. He assured UNICEF of taking good care of the medical equipment and their regular maintenance. He however appealed to stakeholders to support in ensuring that there was regular and stable power supply to the hospital for optimum Service Delivery. The District Chief Executive for Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri District Hon. Joseph Louknaa on behalf of the chiefs and People of the District thanked CHINA-AID/UNICEF for their support in helping the Binde Hospital get an Ultramodern state of the Art Newborn Care Unit.
On her part, the Country Representative of UNICEF Mad. Anne-Claire Dufay expressed her appreciation for the hard work and strong collaboration between the Ghana Health Service and UNICEF in the ex*****on of this Project. She further indicated that UNICEF was collaborating with the Government of Ghana and other Development Partners to ensure that children in Ghana survive, thrive and reach their full potential. She added that it was very important to support Ghana to achieve the SDG Target 3.2, thus; By 2030, End Preventable Deaths of Newborns and Children under 5 years of age, with Ghana aiming to reduce Neonatal Mortality to at least as low as 12 per 1,000 live births, and under-5 mortality to at least as low as 25 per 1,000 live births. According to the Country Representative, the Project aimed at targeting key population who are the vulnerable groups particularly children, adolescent and women. Madam Anne-Claire Dufay intimated that the Project is supporting the Ghana Health Service to reach out to 115,112 children, 128,925 adolescents and 23,022 women in the North East region.
The Director of Family Health Division of Ghana Health Service Dr. Kofi Issah who represented the Director General on his part congratulated CHINA-AID/UNICEF, the Chiefs and People as well as the Health Staff for such a wonderful collaboration in ensuring the establishment of the New born Care Unit. He appealed to the Chiefs and Elders to support health staff with accommodation facilities for more health staff to be posted to work in the hospital. He urged the Management and Health Staff of the hospital to take good care of the expensive equipment provided.
The Hon. Regional Minister Hon. Yidana Zakaria who graced the occasion, on behalf of the Chiefs and People of the North East Region thanked UNICEF and CHINA-AID for their massive support. He indicated that Government was working at expanding Health Service Delivery in the Region through massive investment in Health infrastructure and therefore four districts which are without districts hospitals have been captured as part of Government Agenda 111. The districts who are to benefit from the Agenda 111 include Mamprugu-Moaduri, Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri, Chereponi and Yunyoo-Nasuan Districts. The Minister however lamented on the high teenage pregnancy rate in the Region and therefore called on all stakeholders to support Government in addressing this social canker.
The Pib Rana Kolgu Mammara Banzua II- Paramount Chief of Pibri Traditional Area who chaired the occasion expressed his appreciation to CHINA-AID and UNICEF for the support. He appealed for more support for the hospital from other Development Partners.

USAID/MOMENTUM COUNTRY AND GLOBAL LEADERSHIP (MCGL) PROJECT TO ASSIST NORTH EAST REGION ADDRESS CHALLENGES ASSOCIATED WITH REPRODUCTIVE, MATERNAL, NEWBORN, CHILD, ADOLESCENT HEALTH AND NUTRITION (RMNCAHN) IN TWO DISTRICTS.

The United State Agency For International Development (USAID) through Momentum Country Global Leadership Project is to partner North East Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service to address some key challenges with RMNCAHN by working together to reduce mortalities and morbidities to ensure quality health care delivery in the region which is expected to improve through Health System strengthening in the implementing two districts in the region, namely East Mamprusi Municipal and Mamprugu Moaduri District.

This was disclosed in a meeting held at the North East Regional Health Directorate with officials from USAID/MCGL in Gambaga on Monday 7th September 2021.

Dr.Abdulai Abukari the Regional Director of Health Service for the North East Region welcomed the Officials from USAID/MCGL to the region and assured them of their readiness to partner with them to execute this project. He advised the two implementing districts to see this project as a game changer in the health service delivery especially the Reproductive, Maternal Newborn Child, Adolescent Health and Nutrition interventions in the implementing districts in the region.
Addressing the participants Dr. Abdulai urged the officers from the two implementing districts to work hard and own the project since the intervention were tailored towards addressing some peculiar challenges associated with RMNCAHN in the districts and the region as a whole. He appeals to the USAID/MCGL project coordinators to consider supporting the districts in addressing some additional basic challenges of the two districts selected that are outside their initial scope of the project.

Madam Salamatu Futa- the USAID Representative also urged MCGL and Ghana Health Service to strengthen this collaboration and work hard to achieve the goals of this game changing project.

On her part Mrs. Gladys Brew- the representative of the Family Health Division of Ghana Health Service indicated that the challenges associated with the maternal and child health interventions were very critical and that Ghana Health Service was working feverishly with all partner to address them.
The Technical Director and the team leader of MCGL Dr Pius Essandoh finally took the participants through the project aims and objectives as well as the work plans of the project and its expected benefits to the implementing two districts.

COVID-19 VACCINE SOCIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
Agoo! Fellow Ghanaians, the Ministry of Health/Ghana Health Service and Partners are reminding you that the COVID-19 vaccination still continues.
The current vaccines approved by Ghana FDA are Moderna, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer and Sputnik V.
These COVID-19 vaccines will be given to all persons aged 18 years and above, except pregnant women.
All the approved vaccines are two doses except Johnson & Johnson which is a single dose. They are safe, effective and free.
The health worker will inform you when to come for the second dose if required.
The vaccines offer additional protection against the disease.
Vaccination will take place in health centers and a number of immunization posts set up in schools, markets, churches, bus stations and your neighbourhood to immunize all eligible persons

Wait patiently for 10 to 15 minutes after vaccination before leaving the site
If you feel unwell after the vaccination, seek care and report to the nearest health facility or call the Health Directorate.
