GA’S ARMOURED BDE EXECUTES MAIDEN REGT CHANGEOVER
Ghana Army’s (GA) new 15 Armoured Brigade supervised its first change in Regiment Command when the Commanding Officer (CO) of 153 Armoured Regiment – Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) William Kobina Ackah successfully handed over to Lt Col William Ohemeng.
The historic event took place at the Abugah Square, Gondar Barracks, Burma Camp, Accra, on Thursday April 14, 2022, with the Commander, 15 Armoured Brigade – Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Winfred Dzandu-Hedidor as the Guest-of-Honour and the Commander, Army Special Operations Brigade (ASOB) – Brig Gen Matthew Essien as Special Guest.
General Dzandu-Hedidor, who commands GA’s Armoured Corps, which includes 153, 154, 155 Armoured Regiments based in Accra, Sunyani and Damango, respectively, and the Armoured Training School, Sunyani, extolled Lt Col Ackah for his leadership during his tenure as CO.
Brig Gen Dzandu-Hedidor said of Lt Col Ackah (who commanded 153 Armoured Regiment for three and half years and is to command Ghana Armed Forces’ contingent to the ECOWAS Military Intervention in the Gambia – ECOMIG) that before the formation of the 15 Armoured Brigade, he was single-handedly the ‘foster father’ of the Armoured Corps.
Lt Col Ackah proposed the expansion of the Regiments with the establishment of new fighting squadrons with novel surveillance squadron, provided personnel to support 154 and 155 Regiments to stabilize some who are still in those areas of responsibility, provided accommodation at Gondar Barracks, to house the temporary accommodation for the Brigade Headquarters, on the birth of the Brigade, the Brigade Commander stated.
Turning to the new CO, he urged Lt Col Ohemeng to use his experience at the Command and Staff College (GAFCSC), to lift the unit to higher heights, always coordinate and cooperate with other COs and be ready to support, and as a military leader, although he should do things right as a manager, must lead by doing the right things.
Lt Col Ackah assumed command of the Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment (now 153 Armoured Regiment) on 5 October 2018, with a vision to maintain operational excellence with a winning attitude and a command mission to maintain a robust, agile and motivated Regiment with dependable combat capability, versatile human power, operational efficiency and a winning attitude.
The main driving gears and levers of his command end state were capacity development, capability efficiency, welfare and operational excellence.
In pursuit of capacity development and operational excellence under his leadership, a wide range of training activities such as surveillance courses, platform conversion cadres, trade proficiency tests, Warrant Officers/Senior Non-Commission Officers (NCO) and NCO cadres, exercises and leadership training took place.
In terms of capability efficiency, a number of disused platforms were repaired and rehabilitated by the Unit’s Light Aid Detachment Personnel, which greatly enhanced the kinetic capabilities of the Unit.
To improve welfare and general administration of personnel, with the support of the Military High Command, internally generated funds (IGF) and benevolent friends of the Regiment, facilities at the Mounted Squadron, Offices, Training facilities, various accommodation structures for troops, a new school building for the Armour Day Care Centre, were constructed and a new garage tarred.
In a farewell speech, the outgone CO highly acknowledged benevolent friends of his Unit, such as SUNDA, SAPHOLDA, MAYFAIR ESTATES (CEO – WATSON JOHN OTUMFOUR) amongst others, for helping to construct most of the infrastructure and accommodation in the Regiment, especially the OPPONG-PEPRAH BLOCK.
