At 7 months old, this childs weight was only just 2.7kg. According to the baby's father, the child was abandoned by the mother after breastfeeding the baby for just one month. The baby was left in the care of the father and was fed with whatever food that was available at any particular time due to financial constraints.
The necessary medical and nutrition investigations were carried out, and the appropriate treatment measures commenced.
After three (3) months of treatment, reviews, and periodic home visits, the child has fully recovered. We want to say a big thank you to ALPHA NUTRI FOODS and Dee's Foundation, their dedication, commitment, and undying support. We are immensely grateful.

Stigma is a 'spoilt identity 'or to see someone as inferior because of an attribute they have.People do not always know that their actions are stigmatising.
Quite often, girls in their menstrual period are stigmatised. They were made to understand that menstrual period is an integral part of being a female, and so there was nothing to be ashamed about. They were advised to maintain good hygiene and avoid any mishaps. This will boost their confidence, bring them out of their shells, and help them interact freely with others. Male classmates and men in general were encouraged to see their female counterparts as daughters, sisters, aunts, mothers and family members and refrain from making negative remarks but help them feel good about themselves during this period.
As part of this year's World Menstural Hygiene Day, 28th May Foundation, in collaboration with Mama Nutri Consult, donated sanitary pads and folic acid to adolescent girls in some schools in the Volta Region.
The occasion brought together teachers, nurses, and students. The young ladies were given a talk on how they were to keep themselves clean and tidy and maintain good hygiene during their menstrual period.
They were also admonished on the importance of proper nutrition during this period in order to replenish their bodies. They were encouraged to eat healthy foods such as beans, kontomire,🥬 fish🍗,eggs🥚, banana🍌, sweet potato🥔, and other fruits 🍏🍊🥑and vegetables🥕🥒 available locally. Additionally, they were to drink lot of water 💧 to keep them hydrated and were also cautioned to avoid caffeine and sugary drinks 🍸 🍹 .
Our maiden 'Mama Nutri' Project with the theme, 'Start Right: Feed Right' was held this last quarter of the year 2022. The aim of the project is to initiate innovative measures that will improve healthy nutrition among children under 5 years, minimise malnutrition and if possible eradicate it.
As part of the activities for the day, caregivers were educated on the gaps identified concerning Timely and appropriate complementary feeding. They were also taught on how to fortify meals with locally available foods. Three hundred and fifty three(353) mothers participated in the programme and each person went home with a package.
We will like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who supported both in cash and food items. Especially@ KOKO Plus ,Nutri Cereals and Dee Organics we are very grateful for their kind gesture. God Richly bless everyone for their support. Donations in cash and food items for the welfare of children are still welcome. Thank You!
Has your child ever refused to eat? Or has your baby acted like a type of food was poison when you tried to feed him or her? Mealtimes are a good time for bonding and enjoying new experiences. Unfortunately, it can be a stressful and challenging time for some children. When children begin to act like food is a monster they must run from, then there is the possibility that they have an Oral Aversion.
Oral Aversion, is when a child persistently and consistently doesn't want to eat or allow anything to touch their mouth.
They end up avoiding certain types and textures of food which can lead to nutritional problems. This can develop at any age or stage of development, but it's more common during the weaning period and around 2 - 3 years of age.
SYMPTOMS
🕹Frequent vomiting during or immediately after eating and drinking fluids.
🕹Frequent coughing when eating
🕹Difficulty chewing and swallowing.
🕹Gags and chokes when eating.
🕹 Refuses to eat and/or cries when put in feeding chair.
CAUSES
♦️Sensory issues (means your child is sensitive to the feeling of food such as taste, smell).
♦️Motor issues (child has difficulty moving food through their mouth and swallowing. This is due to muscle weakness, poor coordination) .
HOME REMEDIES FOR ORAL AVERSION
🕹Sweet Mama, Yes it can be frustrating when your child refuses to eat but please, don't force food into their mouth. It does more harm than good.
🕹Be Patient! It takes time to conquer Oral Aversion. And seeing small wins like taking in 2-3 spoons, and not crying when they are being fed, are giant steps of progress.
🕹Let it be fun and play time. Try mock-feeding of dolls with the same food. Feed them a little bit at a time to let them explore and get used to it. Let baby see you taste the food.
🕹Use a toothbrush or teethers to help your child get used to different feelings around their mouth.
🕹Create a relaxed environment around meals and times to put your child at ease.
Mums, I know our minds are full with more questions with no answers . We are afraid our little ones are not getting enough food and this may affect their growth. Don't Panic.Be Positive. Just be alert and responsive to your child's hunger clues and be timely with their feeding. Try encouraging them with gestures and singing to make them happy and put them in the mood to accept the food. Gradually they will come around and it will surely get better.
Success Story(Episode 2)
During one of my Mondays routine ward rounds came across a crying newborn lying all alone without a mother beside her at the maternity unit. This baby has been crying for more than 45mins up until I finished my rounds. With curiosity, l asked the unit Incharge the whereabout of mother and she explained, mother has refused to breastfeed her baby because she has been abandoned by relatives and boyfriend. I requested the presence of the mother but I was told she was nowhere to be found. Birth weight of 2.8kg had drop to 2.2kg and baby was running hypoglycemic due to poor feeding.
Looking at the situation l had to intervene by preparing a therapeutic feed to manage case(child) while we look for the teenage mother. Continuous feeding was becoming a concern due to the cost involved, and with the help of a client’s relative we were able to trace baby's mum and she was brought back to the ward. I counselled and supported mother throughout her breastfeeding journey.
Hmm! It wasn’t easy since mother wasn't emotionally and physiologically prepared for the child, but we thank God for seeing us through. I want to say a big thank you to the community health nurses who always help in following up, midwives and all supporting staffs. Today our little princess is 2years and to God be all the glory 🙏. Sometimes the cases look impossible but God always takes over.

A baby who exclusively consumes breastmilk may not have bowel movement everyday.Infact babies who take only breast milk for the first 6months almost never become constipated, this is because breastmilk is a natural laxative. Normal bowel movement patterns in healthy children vary widely and are greatly affected by the type of milk, whether solids have been introduced and what specific foods are being consumed.
SYMPTOMS OF CONSTIPATION
1.Baby may be less hungry than usual .
2.Their tummy feel firm .
3.lump,hard,dry-like poos.

HEALTHY TIPS ON HOW TO RELIEVE CONSTIPATION.

2.Blend ,mash, chop diet for children who are less than12months in order to encourage them to eat more.
3.Ensure children stay well hydrated. (Water ,homemade juice)
4.Limit milk products (milk 🥛,ice cream 🍨 ,cheese🧀 ,yoghurt.)

SUCCESS STORY (Episode 1)
A 9months old Babies(Twins)👫 boy and girl were admitted on accounts of severe acute malnutrition with medical complications. Their weight was 3.6kg,2.7kg and mid upper arm circumference (MUAC) 7.2cm ,6.9cm respectively after they were screened.
According to mother🧕, breastmilk ceased at 1month, and she being unable to afford baby formula started feeding babies with family foods. Being a single mum of nine(9) she had to fend for the family alone and this put a lot of financial constraints on her.She therefore leaves the twins with her teenage daughter who was also a nursing mum for petty trading since that was their only means of survival.
After a week on admission, mother couldn't afford cost of treatment thereby opted to be discharge home for traditional treatment.
Considering her children's condition, l couldn't discharge as requested by mother but I had to help pay part of their bills and solicited for funds from staffs in order to rehabilitate them.
The condition of babies💏 remained very poor during the first six(6) weeks of treatment which almost made me gave up!More funds later was needed to continue with the treatment which l sort support from hospital management to ensure survival of kids.
After 4months of continous nutrition feeding therapy, the children reached their target weight of 10.5kg,9.5kg with MUAC 12.5cm,12cm respectively and even beyond.👩👦👦 Their appearance now looked their age.wow!!! It hadn't been easy but "God Did it ", aside medical protocols.Thank you Makafui Dzakpasu for your support and believing in me.You challenged me to become better through the complicated cases.

Do you know that babies and children under 5yrs
need a very small amount of salt 🧂(0.6g-3g) in their diet?
Children, meet their salt needs through breastmilk at the first 6months of their life.Once weaning starts and milk feeds reduce, your baby 👶 will get the additional salt from foods .🕹It is important to avoid adding salt to anything you cook from the scratch even if you think it tastes bland.Taste is a very different experience for your baby than it is for you.🕹Also remember not to add salt especially for babies under 12months.Their kidneys are immature to filter out excess salt.🕹After one year, you can include a pinch of salt (1g) in their meals .
Examples of salty popular foods given to little one's are:
Sausages🍣 ,biscuits🧇, pastries,🥟 pizza🍕 gravy, princkles🍟,bread 🍞 and many more. Remember habits formed in children Continue through to adulthood so mums, give children a good start by reducing their salt 🧂 intake today.
One of my aim is to ensure that mothers do not get themselves worked out when introducing complementary foods. During one of my visits to a mother support group, food demonstration on healthy weight gain puree was illustrated. This is a great way to show off easy and delicious receipes using foods found in your locality or your shelf.
"Obaa" don't worry if you can't afford an expensive processed food, work around it yourself.
Mum,Did you know that stunting in children can't be corrected after age 2? Children are selective when it comes to foods, but getting them to eat a well balanced diet is one of the prime responsibilities of a parent. You need to keep a track of your baby's protein intake because protein is a must for kids in their growing years. Don't worry if you don't know how to go about it.

Momma!!🤱🤱,Do you know that frequent and effective breastfeeding in the early days helps baby's body eliminate bilirubin (Jaundice). Newborns who nurse every hour or two have frequent stools, and this eliminates bilirubin from the intestine more efficiently. Breastmilk also contains all the essential nutrient and protect infants from childhood infections.

Starting solids? You got to "START RIGHT FEED RIGHT. Momma!, don't figure it out alone! Infact you 've got a Registered Nutritionist on your side to help you decide WHEN Baby is ready, WHAT foods will help meet your little one's needs and How you 're going to do it.Complementary foods should provide sufficient energy, protein and micronutrients to cover a child's energy and nutrient gaps, so that together with breast milk, they meet all his or her needs.
Around the age of 6 months, an infant’s need for energy and nutrients starts to exceed what is provided by breast milk, and complementary foods are necessary to meet those needs. An infant of this age is also developmentally ready for other foods. This transition is referred to as complementary feeding.
If complementary foods are not introduced around the age of 6 months, or if they are given inappropriately, an infant’s growth may falter.
Ensuring that infants nutritional needs are met requires that complementary foods be:
🕹 Timely– meaning that they are introduced when the need for energy and nutrients exceeds what can be provided through exclusive breastfeeding;
🕹 Adequate – meaning that they provide sufficient energy, protein and micronutrients to meet a growing child’s nutritional needs;
🕹Safe– meaning that they are hygienically stored and prepared, and fed with clean hands using clean utensils and not bottles and teats;
🕹 Properly fed – meaning that they are given consistent with a child’s signals of appetite and satiety, and that meal frequency and feeding are suitable for age.
Caregivers should take active care in the feeding of infants by being responsive to the child’s clues for hunger and also encouraging the child to eat
(To be cont).
