In every first week in May, the people of Simpa (Winneba) celebrate the Aboakyer festival. In this festival, there are two 'asafo' companies; The Tuafo (also known as Asafo no. 1) and the Denstsefo ( Asafo no. 2). These companies comprise of the youth of the town. The aim of these groups every year, is to hunt and bring a live deer.
Previously, according to history, their god Penkyi Otu requested for a live wild cat to replace the yearly sacrifice of a royal blood. The capturing of the live wild cat was much more fatal than sacrificing of a single royal soul. The elders then pleaded with the god to accept a deer in place of the leopard. Thankfully, the god agreed.
Since then, they celebrate the Aboakyer festival every year to remember this historic event and to thank their god for protecting them throughout the year.
