The month of June was very exciting, enriching and full of Allah’s blessings.

24-28 JUNE 2024
BAKU / SHUSHA

I was honored to be nominated by the Islamic Center for Development of Trade (ICDT) and invited to participate in the “By Youth for Youth International Forum” organized by the ICESCO and the Ministry of Youth and Sport of the Republic of Azerbaijan held in the beautiful cities of Baku and Shusha in Azerbaijan from 24 to 28 June 2024, the forum brought together over 100 youth peace ambassadors and youth leaders from 43 countries respectively, alongside the young leaders were esteemed guests such as the Minister of Youth and Sport of Azerbaijan H.E Mr. Farid Gayibov, and ICESCO Director General Dr. Salim Al-Malik, along with other government officials from the Islamic countries including the Minister of Youth and Sport of the Gambia H.E Mr. Bakary Y. Badjie. I was privileged to be one of the youth delegates from The Gambia 🇬🇲.

The 3-day event was centered on collectively drafting resolutions addressing critical issues such as Entrepreneurship, Peace and well-being, Cultural heritage, Innovation, and Sustainable Development. The By Youth for Youth forum was an invaluable opportunity that gave the youths a voice to express themselves. It was also an opportunity to interact and network with young leaders who are drivers of change, appreciating our diversity and cultural differences. Jointly we stand to make a change.

This forum also allowed us to discover the rich culture of the people of Azerbaijan 🇦🇿 and the beautiful city of Shusha, which represents the hope and resilience of the people of Azerbaijan towards national development and commitment to her people. It was truly an invaluable experience.

I am grateful and thankful to ICESCO and ICDT for giving me the opportunity to be part of this impactful forum. I look forward to collaborating with youth leaders on issues affecting us and how to collectively make a positive change in the Islamic world 🌎 and the world as a whole.

Once upon a business

Naturally in Gambian society, most young girls would learn the art of crocheting from an early age mostly before puberty and it's a hobby that they do just to have fun or during their free time. My story begins when I was a child about 6 to 7 years of age I started crocheting, I could remember the first time I ever crocheted was with the use of a broomstick, looking back I kept wondering how I did it in those days, handcrafting is something I inherited from my mother as she is a very handy person, at an early age I would see her making crafted products either through crocheting or embroidery, as a child I learned fast and as I grow older I nurtured the skill and explore more on it.

Like any young lady, I was aspiring to become a nurse, and upon graduation from high school in 2013, I wanted to pursue a career in nursing but little did I know that my dream would never be a reality, unfortunately for me, it was impossible as my Dad wanted me to study accounting, living in a country and in a society where we are highly cultured and brought up to respect our parents, as a result, we can't go against their decisions and this has affected me and my growth. I proceeded with accounting and along the line, the reality of life hit me I found myself out of school due to financial constraints, that experience has been the most challenging, but it taught me a lot about life and how to embrace hardship by taking responsibility, hard work, self-belief, and resilience.

In late 2017, the thought of doing something came to my mind but honestly, I didn't know exactly what to do, suddenly I had the annual International Trade fair organized by The Gambia Gambia of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) and there was an institution by the name of The Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) that wanted to support young aspiring businesses, at this moment I didn't have a business but I had an interest, I applied and was shortlisted, and accepted just two days before the fair, it was so prompt that I asked my mother what would I do, she told me to make the crafts I do and exhibit, that moment, I realized that I have been wasting skills that I learned from my childhood days, because never did the thought of me commercializing my work nor did I ever thought of the potential in it. I decided to give it a try, as a very supportive parent she helped me get the necessary materials and also helped me in making some products. The fair started it was my first time being exposed to a fair and being a vendor but I experienced a lot from meeting new people, networking with my fellow entrepreneurs, and just getting the chance to see what people are offering and how to be different from them, at that moment I knew that I have a special and a unique skill that can make me stand out.

I participated in entrepreneurship and capacity-building training that helped me attain knowledge of entrepreneurship. I also participated in competitions that have helped me to come out of my comfort zone and build my confidence. Although my journey to entrepreneurship has been rough and challenging being the sole sponsor and having to face a lack of materials, equipment and tools have been a great barrier in my business, but then I am a problem solver and I always find a way to solve my problems.

Fast forward to 2021 during the pandemic I nearly go out of business because of the tough situation I found myself in, but my continued self-motivation kept me going. That very year I got accepted by the (WIA) program and I was the 2021 laureate for the Gambia allowed me to meet other young African women leaders, through this program I have the opportunity to extend my network and benefited from other opportunities that lead me to AWEC, been part of Awec cohort 5 exposed me to a network of amazing, hardworking and resilient women across Africa. I learned the power of sisterhood through networking, giving, and receiving feedback have been very impactful towards my business growth. I always set goals but I never fully put them into practice through the Awec program and the learnings I started working according to my goals and I am very proud of my recent growth both personally and professionally.

One thing I wish I knew earlier was the reality of the outside world and the fact that people will always have the right to their own opinions and that should never affect the way to see things, but one thing I learned as an entrepreneur is to embrace feedbacks irrespective of either they're positive or negative you will always have something to learned from it and that makes you a better leader..

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my story to the world.
