Galloya is the village where authentic architecture joins with abstract street art.
Abstract graffitis were accomplished by well-known international artists, who were part of a project named Wide Open Walls to promote peace and respect as well as to create a one-of-a-kind village in Africa that would attract tourists and support the local community through it. The intercultural project started in 2010, when one of the founders of Makasutu Nature Reserve, Lawrence Williams, joined forces with respected Gambian artist Njogou Touray to enlive the area. Artists from around the world visited The Gambia and added their artistic contributions through their graffiti and paintings on the walls of the homes and communal buildings in the village.

When talking about capital cities, one would typically imagine a big, busy metropolis with plenty of high buildings, heavy traffic and a majestic main square. But in our case, Banjul is the total opposite of this image. This small yet unique capital is perfect for a half-day trip to feel the city's pulse.
The City of Banjul was founded in 1816. As an important strategic point of the country, it played a crucial role in history. The city lies on a peninsula, surrounded by river Gambia at the mouth of the Atlantic Ocean. Its position makes it impossible for urban sprawl. It leaves Banjul solely as the administrative and economic centre of the country.

In The Gambia and the whole world, the demand for responsible and community-based tourism has been higher than ever. And it plays an integral part in the future of the industry, especially in improving the quality of life for people who are part of the "product" or progress.
It is also a learning process for visitors and locals and includes responsible tourism education, preserving heritage, respectful cultural interaction between tourists and local people, creating income for communities and poverty reduction, engaging the private sector in tourism development, increasing the concept of shared value, creates better places to live and therefore better places to visit, takes the opportunity to learn about the cultures (even before travelling), etc.

Just about five kilometres after crossing Denton bridge to the island of Banjul along the Independence drive, there are the big blue gates and, on the other side, the headquarters of the National Center for Arts and Culture
(NCAC). Frequented by schools and tourists is also the National Museum of The Gambia, which has been there even before NCAC was created The old museum is a treasury of national and international importance, storing and interpreting The Gambia's history and culture. Alongside a mini craft market can be enjoyed observing the technics of a silversmith or a sand painter. To rest the feet, a small park offers shade and benches but also a well to fetch the water and statues (among them
the soldier with the baby, erected next to the Arch 22 in president Jammeh's regime.)

The Gambia can give a magnificent
view of chimpanzees, hippo’s and monkeys in their natural environment.
Did you know that there are only a few countries in the world where you can see chimpanzees live in relative freedom-without bars or cages, and how fantastic it is that The Gambia is one of them?!
Hippos, birds, monkeys and chimps spotting is also part of Ninki Nanka trail why not book a trip and come and see for your self!

Learning to appreciate what we have - there is a lot of truth in this sentence. Often we do not know how well off we are, because we spend our lives striving for things we don't have. As long as everything is "normal" most of us find it difficult to appreciate all the precious things in our lives. But now we are in the middle of a great global change and many people are beginning to reflect on their lives and make a decision for the future. The general question now, is where this upheaval should take us and which path should we as a society takes in the future.
Major deficits in our world have become all too visible to everyone, especially in the last few months; as if with a magnifying glass, the social problems that had been blazing everywhere for a long time were magnified and thus made clearly recognisable. Especially in the western world, people's everyday lives are nowadays affected by stress and anxiety and this has left its mark. Gratitude and appreciation for the little things in life are hardly present anymore, but more appreciation for everyday realities of life would be absolutely desirable and necessary again!

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO PLAY
WURREY?
Wurrey (Wari or Wuri) or Beans is a game that encourages you to plan ahead. In fact, you could call it African chess. It is one of the oldest games in the world, and it has been
played for thousands of years, using different things to create a playing surface.
The key point is to create 12 holes or cups used as houses for the two opponents. You would also need stones, beans or any other small object, preferably something of a round shape that you can use as moving figures.
In the olden days, the simplest way to create this board game was to dig small holes in the ground and find stones to fit in. Today, in the Gambia, the game is in the shape of a
wooden case with hollowed-out cups, six on each side. The figures used are dried beans of the klukluba tree. Our children love it! 💕.

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT
OFF-SEASON IN THE GAMBIA
Between April and October, there are much fewer tourists in The Gambia. Off-season also called green, low, wet, rainy or mango season affects many businesses and individuals.
The current situation in the world has made things even worse. But we want to share some facts about the green season which you may not know. We are inviting you to The Gambia
throughout the year to make a positive impact on the tourism industry and its people.
The Gambia is a place where summer never ends. It is an all-year-round destination located within comfortable flying distance from major European destinations and capitals in Europe. It is the kind of holiday destination, which is suitable for every type of vacation, whether it is summer vacation for the
entire family, an adventurous trip for students and young people, long winter holidays for retirees, romantic getaway for honeymooners or an educational & volunteering group experience It is different from many African countries. It is a small, quiet, affordable land of smiling people, where many travelers feel like at home. The wonderful nature, wildlife, rich culture and traditions, interesting but painful history, colorful villages and above all friendly, hospitable people who are always willing to help.

The Wassu stone circles are groups of megalithic stone circles that lie in The Gambia north of Janjanbureh . With an approximate area of 30,000 km², they are sometimes divided into the Wassu (Gambian) and Sine-Saloum (Senegalese) circles, but this is purely a national division. Containing over 1000 stone circles and tumuli spread across an area 350km long and 100km wide, the Senegambian stone circles are the largest concentration of stone circles seen anywhere in the world and an extensive sacred landscape that was used for more than 1500 years. As a result, the sites were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2006. I mean come on, this will be on your list when you visit right?

This week I look the little ones to The Gambia Horse and Donkey Sanctuary, we have been soooo excited about coming here for a while, and it was amazing!
The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust (GHDT) is a small charity, registered in both the UK and The Gambia.
The GHDT was founded in 2002 by the late Stella Marsden OBE and her sister Heather Armstrong who is the charity's Director. With no tradition of horsemanship in The Gambia and a combination of poor management, high disease risk and poverty, farmers were investing comparatively large amounts of money for a working animal only for it to die, too often within six months. Not only was this causing further hardship for the farmers, it was also creating a serious animal welfare problem and the veterinary services did not have the infrastructure or finances to be able to help the farmers.

The care that gets given to the donkeys, horses, dogs, cats, camels and cows is amazing, help is needed and you can donate via the website -

We were asked when we told friends and family by a few when we informed them of our plans - ‘what will you do for water!’ 🤨……in The Gambia we dig boreholes 😜
The images show the process, the land is drilled down (by hand) to around twenty meters. A pole is added to stop the erosion with tiny holes to allow the water to get in. It is then pulled up by a pump that is powered by solar and pumped into the house.
As easy as that. 🤷‍♀️🤭

Katchikally Crocodile Pool is hidden in the Provence’s with the north of The Gambia close to an area called Fajara. 🐊
After a tour around the museum (on other videos) there is a short walk through the bush to the largest boboa tree I have ever seen, all of the family meme eta could fit in between the roots and there were seven of us today! At the opening you are startled to see the crocodiles, there were no barriers or fences they were just laying there. The croc’s are all tame and you are allowed to touch anywhere on them apart from the head… some of the party would not do that - I cannot see why! 😬 VIDEO NOW ON YOUTUBE

Yesterday, Gambia celebrated its Independence Day.
The Portuguese in 1455 entered the Gambian region, the first Europeans to do so, but never established important trade there. In 1765, The Gambia was made a part of the British Empire by establishment of the Gambia Colony and Protectorate. In 1965, the Gambia gained independence under the leadership of Dawda Jawara, who ruled until Yahya Jammeh seized power in a bloodless 1994 coup. Adama Barrow became the Gambia's third president in January 2017, after defeating Jammeh in the December 2016 elections. Jammeh initially accepted the results, then refused to accept them, which triggered a constitutional crisis and military intervention by the Economic Community of West African States, resulting in his exile.
