Russia's military invasion in-to Ukraine looks like a violation of international law, something which is of course one of the most serious crimes that can be committed (by a country). At the end of November, an album that is far from being just an album was released. Because it's not just an hour of music, it's not just a sound experience, it's something that goes far beyond the standard framework. Thyrathen and their "ThanatOpsis" is a whole concept in which many performers are involved and a lot of work, and the end result allows this work to be placed much higher than the standard black metal release. It is difficult to treat this album like this, because it is closer to an ancient Greek tragedy than to a metal album - even one steeped in mysticism, as is often the case with Greek composers.

Looking at "ThanatOpsis" only through the prism of genre, it is undoubtedly black metal, but such perception of Thyrathen's debut deprives him of what is most important and offends him to some extent. It diminishes and depreciates. The sound is important here, probably even very important, but everything around is also important. What this sound is based on, what is the foundation, what carries the message and is the womb of the concept. All this is the idea of building a black metal work based on ancient Greek tragedies, philosophy (mainly stoicism and epicureanism), history, Latin literature, old beliefs. This, of course, had an impact on the structure of the disc, hence, for example, the intro is played by a fiery recitation lasting six minutes, accompanied by traditional instruments. Made by an invited artist, entirely Greek, it may tire some people (where is the metal?), But it is a perfect introduction to build the atmosphere. Immediately there is an awareness that we are not communing with a standard work. The Greeks are masters in building the climate, and here it is extremely important. The album lasts an hour, contains ten compositions (the eighth is the second such declamation) and is musically a monolith, filled to the limit with the atmosphere, atmosphere and spirit of ancient theater. Lyrically, "ThanatOpsis" is divided into two parts, which is also a reference to the Greek tragedy. Footnotes have been added to each text, which often allows them to be better understood (not everyone is an expert in ancient literature). Musically, this division is less noticeable because, as I have already mentioned, the album is quite homogeneous. Kept at medium paces, it has many features of the classic Greek school of black metal in its structure. He worshiped her strongly, but is not her slave. There is no such typical space here, the sound layer is denser, more built-up and durable. This is partly due to the number of arrangements used, such as choirs, recitals, traditional, dominant instruments - but how beautiful! - guitar melodies. Interestingly, no keys, no samples or synthesizers were used here. And this - in terms of music and arrangement, considering how this album sounds - is quite an achievement. Traditional instruments, such as the pipes of Dionysus, the lyre or the tympanum (a drum used in ancient Greece for ritual purposes) give a lot. Invited specialists play them here, so it is not an amateur use "to make it look cool". Thyrathen is actually a lot of human potential. The band consists of four men, of which two - the most famous - are responsible for the vocals: the immortal Stefan Necroabyssious and Alexandros from Macabre Omen. However, this does not fully solve the vocal issues, as there are also two invited ladies and two gentlemen (one of them also plays the lyre). The core of the band, however, is Corax S. (drums, occasional vocals and the greatest compositional contribution), and A.Z., who you may know from Kawir. His work is guitars and bass. However, this is still not all that we can hear on "ThanatOpsis", but I will not mention it - if you want, you can find all the information at this address. Suffice it to say that the involvement of so many professionals and people who ate their teeth on black metal resulted in a great album. Of course, it would not be possible without a vision, idea and hard work, because the album took a long time to create and it can be heard that it was not made on the knee. However, I am sure that in its final shape it is a huge reward for the creators, as well as a pleasure for the audience. The Greeks have always been able to weave into their works an ancient climate, mysticism, some kind of sorrow and sublime, but here it has been raised two levels higher. Here despair is epic in size, battle rapture, and old myths and stories touch the soul and heart. One would like more such albums, but it is obvious that not everyone can create something like this. Thyrathen will probably not give us a successor any time soon, but it will still be a long time before I explore this album enough to look forward to the next one. A wonderful work.
