The 2023 voting window is officially closed! We're tabulating the results now to see which of our 385 finalists will earn the coveted 2023 Top Room award.

In the meantime, we would like to extend a huge thank you to the over 1100 contributors this year from 32 different countries, along with all of our volunteer ambassadors and staff that help make this project run smoothly.

Please join us when we announce the results *live* via internet broadcast on Saturday, December 16 at 1pm PST / 4pm EST / 9pm GMT / 10pm CET / 11pm EET / 8 am Sunday AEDT!

The 2023 nomination window is now closed!

Thanks as always to all of our contributors, as we have broken our record for turnout once again.

Over the next several days, we will be finalizing the data and tabulating the results to determine which rooms will be this year's finalists.

In the meantime, here are some quick numbers from this year's nominations:
- Over 440 enthusiasts submitted nominations, up from 359 last year
- Over 4300 individual nominations were submitted
- Over 930 eligible rooms received at least one nomination

Once all the data is finalized, we'll announce the full list of nominees and finalists, then shortly thereafter kick off the voting phase, likely within the next week. Voting will then close on November 30 at 11:59pm Pacific.

Also, don't forget, this year's awards show will be Saturday, December 16 at 1pm PST / 4pm EST / 9pm GMT / 10pm CET / 11pm EET / 8am Sunday AEDT!

We are thrilled to announce the official kickoff for the 2023 TERPECA award season!

Here are some things you might want to know about this year's awards - some things have changed, so please read carefully...

1) Nominations will open in early October, and voting in early November, as always.
If you are already a registered contributor, you'll get an email as soon as each window opens if you are eligible to participate. If you have played 100 or more games and you're not yet registered, please apply at https://voters.terpeca.com. Or, if you were a voter last year, but have hit the 200 games mark since then, you can apply to be upgraded to nominator status. It can take some time to get through the application process, so please don't wait or you may miss out on participating this year!

2) We will once again be awarding 100 Top Room awards.
In 2022, we increased the number of Top Room awards to 100 and discontinued the Top Company and Top Online Room categories. These changes were well received, so we plan to do the same for 2023 and the foreseeable future.

3) We have made some slight changes to the English-language availability rule for room eligibility.
While in past years, we allowed English availability to be added as late as October 30, this year we have changed the rule so that the timing for English availability is consistent with our rules for when the room must be open at all. This is to ensure that eligible rooms are available for all potential TERPECA contributors throughout the voting season. For details on the specifics of this rule, see the post on this topic from July 20, or visit the TERPECA Voter Portal FAQ at https://voters.terpeca.com/faq.

4) The maximum number of nominations per nominator is dropping from 15 to 11.
In 2022, we introduced the concept of automatic finalists for the first time, and lowered the maximum nomination count from 20 to 15. While we only had 50 winners from 2021 that were to become automatic finalists for 2022, this year we will be doubling the number of automatic finalists to the 100 winners from 2022. As a result, we have once again lowered the maximum number of nominations to account for this change. The number 11 was chosen based on a detailed analysis of last year's nomination data, where we found that with this new threshold, nominators should, on average, have the same approximate nomination power as they had last year. We expect that compared to last year, this change will again give slightly more nominating power to our most experienced nominators, since more of the rooms they likely would have nominated were past winners, while less experienced nominators will have slightly less power in nominations, which should keep nomination quality at an appropriately high level.

5) We will be collecting data during the voting phase on horror preferences.
It is no secret that horror-themed rooms have historically done well in the TERPECA awards, and there are many theories as to why this is the case. This year during the voting phase, we will be asking voters to let us know their personal preferences with regards to horror-themed games so that we can better assess the situation and will use this data to consider making future changes to the algorithm to account for this potential bias. This data will not be used in ranking, it is strictly to help us understand the landscape of preferences and priorities.

6) We will change the way in which quotes are collected for use in the live show and on the website.
In the past, we have collected player quotes about the games to use in the live show presentation and the website only during the nomination phase. Since we now have 100 games that are auto-finalists, we will now be collecting potential quotes about games during the voting phase instead. This will also give a chance for voters that are not nominators to have a quote chosen about their favorite game.

7) We are continuing to grow our regional ambassador program.
We now have 18 ambassadors covering 17 different countries (Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, US, and UK) and are always looking to add good candidates for other countries with a large number of world-class English-playable escape rooms.

This year we are pleased to announce three new ambassadors:
Santiago Onel is the new ambassador to Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.
John Devendorf is the new ambassador to the United States.
Georgina Vanikiotis is a new co-ambassador to Greece, joining Elli Kouliadelli.

Ambassadors must be enthusiasts first and cannot be affiliated with any escape room businesses, and must participate in the project as a contributor for at least one year before being eligible to become an ambassador.

8) What can I do between now and the start of the nomination/voting window?
Plenty!
If you're a player, and you've played at least 100 escape games and haven't yet applied to be a contributor, you can do that now at https://voters.terpeca.com. If you were a voter last year and have since passed 200 games, you can now apply to become a nominator. You can also spread the word to any other qualified enthusiasts you know to sign up. And of course, you can always support the industry by just playing more escape games.
If you're an owner that has a room that you think deserves recognition this year, be sure it is available to the public and available in English no later than October 1. Beyond that, you can encourage the nomination-eligible TERPECA contributors in your area to play your game before it is time for nominations or you can print and display our promotional posters to help promote and recruit: (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1hTU9vfiZ7y7hZfHyHYFYWZjJWEdEFqDi?usp=sharing).

ATTENTION OWNERS!

As the 2023 TERPECA award season approaches, we have decided on a handful of changes this year and have some exciting things in store. While most of these will be announced closer to the award season kickoff, this one may affect your planning for any games you intend to launch this year, so here it is...

For a room to be eligible for the 2023 TERPECAs, it must be open to the public AND playable in English for at least one full month between November 1, 2022 and October 31, 2023. For regions in which English is not the primary language, English availability must be clearly designated at the company's website and/or linked booking platform. This means that if a room is not open and available to play in English by October 1, 2023, it will not be eligible for this year's awards. (This differs from our previous policy in which English availability could be added as late as October 30.)

If you are opening a new room close to the deadline, we recommend that you make a social media post announcing your room launch that includes your first bookable date and your English availability prior to October 1 so that there is no ambiguity regarding your eligibility.

Finally, for a room to be eligible, its operator must intend to continue offering English-language play as long as the room is open. We may even retroactively remove rooms from the results if they become unavailable in English. We respect the difficulty of creating and operating an escape room in multiple languages, and we know that glitches or brief periods of unavailability may happen despite best efforts and intentions, and we will never remove a result lightly. However, we are dedicated to honoring great rooms which are available to the international English-speaking community, and to recognizing operators committed in good faith to serving that community. We realize this "good faith intention" rule is subjective; anyone with questions or concerns should contact us.
