Congress Declaration ๐
With the congress theme 'From Wealthy to Healthy Cities,' the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP) and the Brussels Capital Region highlighted the need for conceiving another world where collective well-being is put at the center of political agendas and no one is left behind.
provided the ISOCARP community with crucial information to build healthier cities capable of adapting to the future endeavors of our global society. Even before the Covid19 pandemic, many cities lagged, and the gaps continue to widen. Therefore, our congress provided a platform to discover how to integrate methods that prioritize people, places, and the planet and move beyond profit and growth to nurture social, cultural, and ecological well-being.
It is time to take a rights-based approach and reclaim affordable housing, sustainable mobility, viable water and energy management, and access to essential goods and services as rights, not merely as commodities in cities! We must overcome all the barriers to diversity and equity, ensure sociocultural and economic inclusion and strive to attain socio-spatial justice, including fair use of spaces and a just land use management.

๐ SPECIAL SESSION: Health care in spatial planning๐
We are excited to present our special session with care and urban planning experts who experiment and develop methodologies that contribute to health. The environment in which we live directly influences our lives and impacts our health and well-being. The effects observed on the health of populations are apparent such as in the increase in the number of deaths, changes in food production cycles, development of respiratory pathologies, and the development of mental health disorders. Acknowledging the importance of prevention and a Health in all Policies approach, cities can be the platform for integrated responses to increasing people's well-being effectively.
What is the role of urban and spatial planners in health policies? How can the built environment promote health and care? How can we work hand in hand with the health and care sector, and how can we achieve this? Which specific insights and methods developed by health sector experts will help make urban planning more effective as a public policy and investment?
These are some questions the presenters will cover, followed by a discussion with panelists and the audience to grasp how we can advance health in our society.
See you all there!

๐SPECIAL SESSION: Shifting (urban) economy: What place for economic transition in the city?๐
We are excited to hold our special session on Urban Circular Economy with our collaborators of Brussels- Capital Region. Like many other European cities, Brussels has embraced alternative methods for a sustainable economy as a critical element of its Economic Transition Strategy. Indeed, through the shift toward Urban circularity, cities aim to anchor economic production locally, stimulate the creation of new jobs and reduce environmental impacts. However, urban CE policies have shown a set of contradictions and limitations in delivering their socio-ecological transformative potential. This special session will discuss which spatial planning perspectives would foster urban circularity practices which are more inclusive, enable local communities' empowerment, and contribute to the city's socio-economic-environmental resilience.

๐ฃSPECIAL SESSIONS: Spatial planning beyond economic growth: approaches for an urbanization in a finite planet ๐ฃ
ISOCARP is happy to present one of our most relevant special sessions during dedicated to promoting a healthy economy. To this end, this event will discuss the spatial and social well-being of cities as they become increasingly dependent on economic growth. Yet, this growth comes at the cost of material depletion and social conflicts. How can cities thrive while decreasing their ecological impact? What approaches can spatial planners use to pursue social well-being, human health, and spatial qualities while decreasing the pressure of cities on the environment? This special session will explore these and more questions about our exacerbated economic model.

One of the great territorial thinkers
๐ฃ We are honored to announce Professor Erik Swyngedouw as one of the keynote speakers for the !๐ฃ
Dr. Swyngedouw is a professor of Geography at Manchester University. He was also a geography professor at Oxford University until 2006 and held the Vincent Wright Visiting Professorship in Political Science at Science Po, Paris, in 2014. His research interests include critical theory, political ecology, urban governance, democracy, political power, and the politics of globalization. As a leading researcher in environment-society relationships and the analysis of the capitalist space economy, his work emphasizes analyzing socio-environmental conflicts, water politics, political and economic crises, and urban political movements.
During his keynote presentation, he will center on โimmunity planningโ and explore the potential de-politicizing processes accompanying the controversies over the Anthropocene. With him, we shall discuss and uncover some uncomfortable, disturbing dynamics that are not readily visible behind the narratives of sustainability and resilience. We will then explore possible trajectories for re-politicization and the alternative socio-ecological relations engaged by planners.

๐To attain planetary health, sustainability and resilience, we need to reframe our thinking and focus on revitalizing and regenerating our natural world, prioritizing nature-based solutions, climate adaptation and mitigation, biodiversity, and integration of natural and urban systems.
