The island's name "Samos" comes from Phoenician meaning "rise by the shore", according to Strabo a Greek geographer. This rather big island is in the centre of the Aegean Sea and only 1200 meters divide it from Turkey. Samos is located between the parallels 37.49 and 37.37 to the North and the meridians 26.33 and 27.04 to the East. The island has an extent of 477.395 km2, which makes it one of the biggest islands of Greece. East of the island you can find Turkey and Minor Asia,, north of Samos is the Cherosonese of Erythrea, the island of Chios is situated northwest of Samos, to the West and Southwest you can find Ikaria and the Fournoi islands and the Dodecanese is south of Samos.
