Democrats Abroad Guatemala
When Democrats vote, Democrats win. It is as simple as that. It is the goal of DAGT to advance the principles of the Democrat Party here in Guatemala.
Democrats Abroad Guatemala (DAGT) is the official Democratic Party for the thousands of Americans living in Guatemala. DAGT works to keep Americans here advised of their rights, encourage involvement in the electoral process, assist the facilitation of voter registration and voting regardless of party affiliation, and host events so that interested people can get together to meet and discuss their opinions of important issues.

Demonstration Alert: Political Transition and Potential Demonstrations in Guatemala on January 14, 2024
Location: Guatemala City
Event: The Guatemalan Presidential inauguration is scheduled for Sunday, January 14. U.S. Citizens in Guatemala are advised that demonstrations and sporadic acts of violence are possible during this time. While past demonstrations in Guatemala have generally been peaceful and not targeted at tourists or foreigners, it is important to note that even peaceful gatherings can escalate suddenly. The U.S. Embassy recommends steering clear of areas where demonstrations are occurring. If demonstrations were to occur, this may prevent your ability to travel throughout Guatemala, and you may need to postpone in-country travel. If you choose to travel in the country, you can consult the government of Guatemala’s PROVIAL website (Dirección General de Protección y Seguridad Vial) for up-to-date information about locations of roadblocks.
Please be advised that inaugural events and planned public festivities may cause disruptions to traffic in the coming days. Please exercise caution, as it may not be readily apparent whether people are demonstrating or celebrating. Stay informed and plan your routes accordingly.
U.S. citizens are reminded that unforeseen changes to travel plans, such as cancellations, delays, or alterations, may occur due to ongoing political demonstrations, weather-related events, security issues, or health concerns. Keep yourself updated on local news and embassy communications for real-time information on any developments, road closures, or disturbances that may affect your plans.
The timing, size, and duration of demonstrations, roadblocks, and/or celebrations can change. Demonstrations can grow quickly in size and often move from one location to another, thus potentially disrupting movement. The Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens be aware and vigilant, avoiding protests, demonstrations, and roadblocks, when possible.
Deciding whether to travel to or depart Guatemala is a personal decision. The U.S. Embassy continually assesses travel conditions in Guatemala and regularly updates our travel advisories and safety information for U.S. citizen travelers. For entry and exit, safety and security, and other relevant travel information about Guatemala, please go here. The Guatemala Travel Advisory is located here. The Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) also maintains a country security report on Guatemala here. The U.S. Embassy is not otherwise permitted to advise individuals whether to travel to Guatemala or to provide individualized risk assessments.
Please be advised that in an emergency, U.S. Embassy personnel are not first responders. If you need emergency assistance, Guatemala has a dedicated tourism assistance program (called PROATUR) whose sole mission is to assist and protect foreign tourists in Guatemala. Their emergency assistance call center – staffed with Spanish and English speakers – may be contacted 24/7 by calling 1500 from a Guatemalan phone number or (502) 2290-2810. You may also contact PROATUR by WhatsApp at +502-5188-1819.
The U.S. Embassy will be closed on Monday, January 15, 2024, to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We will be open on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, and will resume normal appointments for American Citizens Services.
Actions to Take:
· Review your personal security plans and remain aware of your surroundings, including local events.
· Monitor local news for updates.
· Maintain a high level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security, and follow instructions of local authorities.
· Avoid affected areas and exercise caution.

HEALTH ALERT
The Embassy of the United States of America
Guatemala City, Guatemala
Health Alert: National Health Emergency Declared in Guatemala Due to Dengue Epidemic (September 1, 2023)
Location: Throughout Guatemala
Event: Guatemala's Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS) declared a National Health Emergency on August 31, 2023, due to a dengue epidemic in Guatemala. Over the last three months more than 10,000 cases of dengue have been reported in the country, including the more severe (often called hemorrhagic) cases.
To date, there have been 12,263 confirmed dengue infections in Guatemala, of which 14 percent (or 1,720 cases) are severe dengue. There have been 22 deaths reported, the majority among children under age 15. Thus far, the areas with the highest incidence of dengue are Zacapa and Antigua, followed by Chiquimula, Petén, Escuintla, Quetzaltenango, and Baja Verapaz.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have provided the following information about dengue on their website :
Dengue
Dengue viruses are spread to people through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. Dengue is caused by one of any of four related viruses (dengue virus 1, 2, 3, and 4), all of which have been present in Guatemala. The same type of mosquitoes can also spread Chikungunya, Zika, and other viruses. If a person is infected with different dengue viruses during their life, it increases the chance of severe disease.
Aedes mosquitoes typically lay eggs in containers with standing water, like buckets, bowls, animal dishes, flowerpots, and vases. Mosquitoes come out to feed around sunrise and sunset, but people can be bitten by an infected mosquito at any time during the day or night. Aedes mosquitoes often like to rest in closets or other indoor locations near humans.
Symptoms of Dengue Fever
Infection with dengue virus can result in no symptoms or mild or severe illness. Severe dengue can be life-threatening within a few hours and requires care at a hospital.
The most common symptom of dengue is fever with any of the following: nausea, vomiting, rash, aches, and pains (including muscle, joint, or bone pain, or eye pain, typically behind the eyes). There is no specific medicine to treat dengue.
About one in 20 people who get sick with dengue will develop severe dengue. Severe dengue can result in shock, internal bleeding, and even death. If you have had dengue in the past, you are more likely to develop severe dengue when re-infected. Infants and pregnant women are at higher risk of developing severe dengue.
Watch for signs and symptoms of severe dengue. Warning signs usually begin in the 24-48 hours after your fever has gone away. Immediately seek medical evaluation if you have any of the following symptoms : belly pain or tenderness, vomiting (at least three times in 24 hours), bleeding from the nose or gums, vomiting blood, blood in your stool, or feeling tired, restless, or irritable.
Actions to Take:
Consult the CDC website for more information about dengue transmission, testing, symptoms, and treatment, and mosquito control.
Seek medical treatment if experiencing any warning signs or any symptoms that cause you concern.
Outside your home, remove standing water where mosquitoes may lay eggs, such as tires, buckets, planters, toys, pools, birdbaths, flowerpot saucers, or trash containers.
Inside your home, empty any items that hold water, such as vases or flower pot saucers.
Close windows and doors, or ensure you have screens in place. Consider using an indoor insecticide if you have mosquitoes in your home.
Use mosquito repellent when outdoors. Repellents with DEET or picaridin give the longest protection, but there are many effective options available .
