One elder, a distant auntie of mine after church politely said to me: "Neni, thank you for your singing today. Beautiful as always. By the way good job on those piñatas you make.

Me: ai adai auntie thank you🥰. You've seen?

Her: yes baby, at my grand nephew's friend's son's birthday. I said 'wow I know a young lady from Talofofo who makes these things and then when told me they got it from si Breanna Davis from Talofofo I said Yes! That's the one! But she's not Davis anymore. She married a Baza.

My heart smiled so bright at this. Just knowing there are people out there that like what came from my heart and my hands warms me. You get extra points for remembering my maiden name lol

Whether it's cooking, weaving, scrubbing, mcgaivering, or Piñata making... I connect it with my ancestors and what they used their hands for. Definitely not pinata making but they did everything by hand. Every creation has a piece of me and my ancient past. Running Magof Piñatas isn't only fun, it's spiritual and very sentimental.

I forgot to post this here last year. I made this number 4 for a pool party.

The biggest pinata I ever made was this closet door from the Disney Pixar Monsters Inc movie. It was 3 ft tall and 2.5 ft wide! Happy Birthday Khallie!

•Chenchule is one of several ancient acts we still practice today. Piñatas have been around Asia, Spain, Mexico and America for hundreds of years. Though it may not be Chamoru, it plays a part in getting children together to participate in fun and laughter. Our children, I famagu'on-ta hold the keys to a better future. I'm just finding ways to keep them happy and hopeful in a world that is ever changing and not always bright. Together we can illuminate the light within ourselves and in others. Magof Piñatas was an idea inspired by the light in my children including my two angel babies who left earth too soon. Hope is all we have. We have to hold on to that and spread it.

My goal with this project was to honor all four of my children and to perpetuate kustombre yan i linguåhi, our customs and language through art. As I am learning more about myself and my Chamoru identity, I am looking forward to doing this again next year.
