No More Transgender and Sexual Orientation Discrimination

Hong Kong’s top court handed down a landmark ruling last week that will allow two transgender people to amend their gender listing on their identity cards, without undergoing full reassignment surgery. Some of the surgical procedures are considered too risky.

The ruling is only “limited victory”, because it focused narrowly on the ID card as an administrative document. Hong Kong still needs to develop sophisticated gender recognition policies that allow transgender people to live free from harassment.

On the other hand, sexual orientation is still subject to discrimination in Hong Kong which is considered a cosmopolitan city!

Local radio DJ Yue Dik-wai’s topless image was featured publicly last week at a concert hosted by his colleagues and the boy band I Love You Boyz, without getting his consent. Yue accused the duo of sexual orientation discrimination and workplace bullying.

Yue’s complaint is not without reasons. Yue’s updates have always been covered on the duo’s radio programme and he was also teased in a star-stubbed basketball tournament recently, both based on his sexual orientation.

Believe Hong Kong should work harder towards a city of inclusion and diversity.

The UNHCR has estimated more than 4 million people within Ukraine has fled the war seeking refuge in countries bordering Ukraine. It is the largest exodus in Europe since the Balkan wars of the 1990s sparking humanitarian and healthcare crises.

Hong Kong’s public health care system has stretched to its limit under the fifth wave of infections and our public health care workers have been under immense pressure. It is high time to show our appreciation for their hard work and dedication!
