We all know it and we've all had it - but do any of us actually know
the story of it? 🤔
This Meet Your Maker Monday, we'll tell you about the man, the myth,
and the legend that is Edmund McIlhenny. 👏🏼
Founded in 1868 on Avery Island, Louisiana, Edmund first invented the
Tobasco Pepper Sauce as a way to liven up the cuisine of the
Reconstruction South. 🇺🇸 Food at the time was known to be bland,
monotonous, and nothing like what we now know as Louisiana cuisine.
Taking Capsicum Frutescens peppers seeds from Mexico and Central. America, Edmund started putting his greenfingers to work and planted a field of peppers for his very first batch of Tobasco. 🌶️ The sauce was named Tobasco after a Mexican Indian word which is believed to mean "place where the soil is humid'' or "place of the coral or oyster shell" 🦪 and soon after, it was off to the shelves. Each bottle sold at $1 a piece and by the 1870s, Tobasco was a nationwide hit - with
bottles found across the Atlantic as well. 🇪🇺
Edmund made sure that the bottle design included sprinkler fitments,
as he believed that the sauce was best used when sprinkled, not poured - due to how concentrated and potent the sauce itself is! 💦
Now, 150 years later, only a few things have changed from the original recipe. The pepper mash gets aged up to 3 years in white oak barrels, while the vinegar used in the sauce is only the highest quality
distilled vinegar. 🛢️ However - that doesn't stop Tobasco from growing
its line of delicious Hot Pepper Sauces. Nine different variations of
Tobasco can now be found on shelves worldwide, with a cult following for the sauce wherever you go around the world. 🔥

Founded in 1993, Dave Hirschkop is the brilliant daredevil behind 👹 The idea for Dave’s Gourmet first started when Hirschkop used to work at a taqueria near the University of Maryland. 🌮
As we all know, no good ever comes out of college students and tequila. 🥴 So - in attempt to curb their enthusiasm, Dave began to mix hot sauces and serve them to the drunk patrons that wandered in.
Yet, what first started as a prank and a way to mess with his customers soon became Dave’s next business idea. 🤑 Rather than mixing sauces for heat, Dave started makin his own. His hottest sauce “Insanity” even gained a huge following amongst the chiliheads and paved the way for award, after award, after award. 🏆🏆🏆 Insanity even managed to get banned from the National Fiery Foods Show for being too spicy! 🥵🔥
Dave’s Gourmet has since grown from exclusively hot sauces in its portfolio to a line of delicious dressings, spicy snacks, and even award-winning pasta sauces! 🍝 For their 20th anniversary, Dave’s Gourmet also made the world’s most expensive pasta sauce with white truffle and gold flakes - retailing at $1000 USD per bottle! 🍄

This Meet Your Maker, we’re going to find out who let the dogs out?? 🐕🦮🐩🐕🦺Mad Dog 357 that is! 🐶
Made lovingly by Ashley Food Company, the origins of started with founder David Ashley’s dream to develop *the* perfect barbecue sauce. 🍗 From their humble roots in Brighton, Massachusetts, David started his sauce journey when he was trying to concoct and develop the recipe for a barbecue sauce that would delight him, his family, and loved one as well.
The sauce was a hit! 💥 Not only did his close friends and family love the sauces, but so did the masses. In just five years, David had to move out of his own kitchen and into a commercial kitchen - just to fill all the incoming orders he was receiving! 👨🏻🍳
As demand for Mad Dog continued to grow, so did David’s desire to branch out and try new flavors and heat levels. 🥵 In 2013, he partnered with UMass Amherst to grow Trinidad Moruga Scorpion peppers and later, began growing their own peppers in Las Cruces, New Mexico. 🇹🇹🦂

Founded by Scott Moritz in 2004, was the passion
project behind Scott's globetrotting love for flavor. 🫶🏼 His love for
food started when he joined a chili cook-off at 13. From there, it catalysed into venture after venture in the beautiful world of food &
beverage. He ran a pie company, catering businesses, a tamale cart,
and even helped found a franchise restaurant in Portland! 🥧🫔 Yet,
wherever he was, Scott always had room and a plate for his family and
friends, making sure that they had received a slice of hospitality
wherever he was. 🍽️
Secret Aardvark first began as a way for Scott to stay busy. As a flavor fiend, he was always searching for new ingredients to play with
and equally, get a taste of the 💀world. 😋He first started selling Secret
Aardvark at the Portland farmer's markets, but soon saw the rapid
spread of its popularity all across the US. 💥
Unfortunately, Scott passed away in 2009 from pancreatic cancer, but
his passion for hot sauce lives on through his wife, Stacy. Now at the
helm, Stacy is the champion of Secret Aardvark and helps bring the
brand to life through the same fun, quirky curiosity that Scott brought to the sauce. 🌈 One can still find unique ingredients such as
coffee and cherries infused in their sauces, the very same way Scott
would have done. ☕️🍒
As proud Portlandians, they're also proud to give back to their
community. With 3% of their net profits going to local charities,
choosing locally made containers to reduce their carbon footprint, and

If you've ever been on the spicy side of Tik Tok, it's without a doubt that you would've seen video after video of people doing the notorious One Chip Challenge. ☠️ For today's Meet Your Maker, we're meeting Doug Lyon Jr. and Peter Berta (not pictured) the two founders behind .🔺🔻🔺🔻
Paqui Chip's parent company, Roaring Brands, was initially founded by Doug Lyon Jr. and Rich Tlapek. Two long-time advertising and FMCG moguls, they were passionate about building brands from the ground up and also developing brands that people loved. 🫶🏼 In 2008, Doug and Peter established Paqui Tortilla Chips and started selling them at Whole Foods first, and then Krogers.

For today's Meet your Maker, we're asking you - What do you get when you add a love for cooking ❤️ + a love for spice 🌶️ + a passionate locavore 🥦? You get Gene, from Karma Sauces ( )!
Before I go on, you might ask, who or rather, what, is Locavore? 🦕 A locavore is someone who attempts to eat with locally sourced produce/foods, within a 100 mile (160 km) radius. Got it? Ok, good.
Now, Gene from Karma Sauces always grew up cooking with his parents at home.👨🏻🍳His dad was a chef for the US army and his mom was busy whipping up a storm in the kitchen. It's safe to say, food was a huge part of his childhood. 😋
Even as he moved into his adult years, Gene's passion for cooking, pickling, and eating sustainably never quavered. After his children were born, he and his family moved back to upstate New York to be closer to family and friends, only to quickly befriend their new neighbors, the Chey-Warrens.👫🏻
On one fateful autumn day in September 2008, Laura Chey invited Gene to do the locavore challenge with her. Already passionate about eating locally and sustainably, Gene was inspired to apply the same locavore principles to the hot sauces he made at home. 🌶️ And thus - Karma Sauces was born. ☯️💫
Starting with 'Good Karma' and 'Bad Karma' sauces, Gene strived to create sauces that had all of the good stuff (vitamins, nutrients, flavor) and none of the bad stuff (corn syrup, other sauces mixed in). He wanted to do something new, something different, and something that showed what beautiful produce his state had to offer. 🍅🥦🫛🌽🫑
Two years after going into the locavore challenge, Karma sauce was a full-fledged production. Gene and his wife Kelly were overwhelmed at the amount of positive feedback received on the sauces and soon saw themselves investing in commercial grade equipment, and even a whole farm for them to grow their very own peppers! 🌱
Since starting Karma Sauces, Gene and his family have happily settled into their new farm on North Bristol, New York where they continue to make sauces to this day.

You’ve heard about Farm to Table, but what about Farm to Bottle? And this time, we mean it. 🍴
After years of working in the corporate world, the husband and wife duo behind Angry Goat Pepper Co. decided it was time to put their corporate lives behind and spend some time on their hobby farm in Vermont instead. 👩🏻🌾 And yanno, maybe make a little money in the process.
Like any traditional farm, they started off raising chickens and eggs, but it wasn’t until they ventured into goat meat that interest in the farm started to grow. 🐐 But that wasn’t enough. Goat meat on its own was great, but it was missing something. 🤔
After scouring the farmer’s market where they sold their produce, they soon noticed that there wasn’t anything spicy to go with their goat meat. 🥵 But - after having tried pepper jellies for the first time during their honeymoon in Bermuda and having done a number of hot wing challenges in college, it became clear that this was what was the goat and the farmer’s market was missing.
Using extra peppers from their garden, it started with pepper jams for family and friends before eventually debuting at their local farmer’s market and winning fans from far and wide. 🌶️🔥
Since 2016, Angry Goat has slowly transitioned from being a family farm to a full scaled hot sauce kitchen that proudly makes a range of jellies, hot sauces, and condiments straight out of The Green Mountain State. ⛰️
