DBS Olympiad in Informatics Team

The Hong Kong Olympiad in Informatics (HKOI) 2023/24 was held on 16 December 2023. Our Team won 6 Gold Medals, 5 Silver Medals and 4 Bronze Medals. In addition, Chong Tsz Sing (9S) have also won the Best Young Contestant Award, and Hui Pak Yu (8D) have also won the Best First-time Contestant (Junior Group) Award.

With this result, we have captured the Overall Championship (Grand School Prize) in this contest, for the third time in the past four years.

Thanks must be given to Mr. R.K.Y. Cheng, Mr. K.W. Cho and Mr. L.T. Chan, our Headmaster, Dean of Culture, and the Teacher in-charge, for providing all the assistance we need and showing their utmost support to our Team. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Mr. A.Y.H. Leung ('17), our coach over the past year, for his dedication in strengthening the coding skills of our team members. As a representative of University of Cambridge at the International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals, as well as a two-time World Finalists in the Meta Hacker Cup, Mr. Leung is a top-class programmer. He has provided valuable advice on problem-solving ideas, and envisioned our boys to reach new heights with his experience. We would not have achieved such results without his guidance all the way.

[Problem Author of the European Girls Olympiad in Informatics]

While most programmers aspire to achieve great results in international programming competitions, ours took a path that is even less taken. Our captain Isaac Chan (11G) was invited to be one of the problem authors in the European Girls Olympiad in Informatics 2023, which was held in Lund, Sweden in July.

While problem authors of international programming competitions are usually national team leaders and coaches, it is very unusual for a high school student like Isaac to participate with such a role.

Throughout the past years, Isaac has not only contributed to defend the school’s title in interschool competitions, but also served as a great role model of all members of our Team, as he served tirelessly to help junior members pick up programming skills, as well as setting numerous problems for internal mini competitions. As Isaac is going to pass the baton to the next generation, we wish him all the best in his future endeavours!

[International Olympiad in Informatics 2023]

The IOI 2023 was held in Szeged, Hungary from 28 August to 4 September. Congratulations to Bosco Wang (10D) for winning a Bronze Medal in the competition!

This is the 7th consecutive year for Diocesans to represent Hong Kong to take part in the IOI. We will continue to strive for perfection and achieve great heights in international competitions.

Organised by the University of Waterloo, the Canadian Computing Competition was held on 16 February. Among 9662 contestants from 28 countries, several of our students ranked top positions in different groups of the competition. Results are as follows:

In addition, Wang Chi Ho has also won the Best Young Contestant Award, and Shiu Yu Hin Bernard has won the Best First-time Contestant (Senior Group) Award.

With this result, we came 2nd in the Overall score (Grand School Prize) in this contest, missing the Championship by a narrow 1-point margin.
