Always Enough
Karen S. Wheat (Michigan, USA)

Today's Reading
Luke 9:10-17
10 When the apostles returned, they described for Jesus what they had done. Taking them with him, Jesus withdrew privately to a city called Bethsaida. 11 When the crowds figured it out, they followed him. He welcomed them, spoke to them about God’s kingdom, and healed those who were sick. 12 When the day was almost over, the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so that they can go to the nearby villages and countryside and find lodging and food, because we are in a deserted place.” 13 He replied, “You give them something to eat.” But they said, “We have no more than five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all these people.” 14 (They said this because about five thousand men were present.) Jesus said to his disciples, “Seat them in groups of about fifty.” 15 They did so, and everyone was seated. 16 He took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up to heaven, blessed them, and broke them and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17 Everyone ate until they were full, and the disciples filled twelve baskets with the leftovers.

Thought for the Day
With God there is always enough!

Those who offer me hospitality

Everyone ate until they were full, and the disciples filled twelve baskets with the leftovers. - Luke 9:17 (CEB)

Many years ago, as a young pastor serving a small rural parish, I was honored to host Chief George and his wife from the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference as guest speakers at our church.

When the service was over, I learned that I was supposed to provide a Sunday dinner for my guests before they traveled to speak at another church later that afternoon. I panicked. I had never, ever entertained anyone for a meal. But that wasn’t the worst of it. I had only a small roast in the slow cooker — more than enough for one but surely not enough for three.

Taking a deep breath, I invited them over to the parsonage to relax. I then rummaged through my cupboards to see what I could add to the meal. I found a box of instant mashed potatoes and two cans of green beans. I also found a box of instant pudding and prayed that there was enough milk in the fridge to make both the potatoes and the pudding.

As it turned out, we had a wonderfully filling and pleasant meal, and my guests were nourished before their next event. Every time I read the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand, I am reminded of my meal with Chief George and his wife. That day I learned that with God we always have more than we think we have. Even when there seems to be too little, if it is served with love, there is always enough.

Today's Prayer
Loving God, help us to trust you to know our needs even before we ask and then to accept your gifts graciously. Amen.

Deep Roots
David Coxton (Michigan, USA)

Today's Reading
Jeremiah 17:7-8
7 Happy are those who trust in the LORD, who rely on the LORD. 8 They will be like trees planted by the streams, whose roots reach down to the water. They won’t fear drought when it comes; their leaves will remain green. They won’t be stressed in the time of drought or fail to bear fruit.

Thought for the Day
Practicing spiritual disciplines will help me avoid spiritual drought.

Prayer Focus
Hikers

[Blessed is the one whose] delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither — whatever they do prospers. - Psalm 1:1-3 (NIV)

My wife and I took a late summer hiking trip through northern New Mexico. The scenery was quite a contrast to the lush, green vegetation of our home state of Michigan. The New Mexico landscape is brown and arid — except for a few green trees that caught our attention. We were intrigued. How could these trees be so green, while all the other vegetation around them was so dry?

Farther down the trail we came upon a placard that explained that the trees we were looking at were junipers. They have a unique root structure that allows them to thrive in arid lands. While the root systems of most plants are shallow, the roots of the juniper tree can go down 25 feet and spread 100 feet in search of water. Their root system allows them to survive drought, while other plants wilt.

This made me wonder: What is our ability to survive spiritual droughts? How deep are our roots? What can we do to help our roots find the source of life-giving water?

Regular study of the Bible, prayer, devotional literature, and participating in the church community are some of the practices that help us remain deeply rooted and spiritually green in arid seasons!

Today's Prayer
Dear God, help us to grow deep and wide-spreading roots that search for your life-giving water in all seasons. Amen.

We stand with you in prayer, trusting in the comforting presence of our Lord. As we remember the life of Sister Victoria, we hold on to the promises of scripture:

Serving Others
Elizabeth Erlandson (Nebraska, USA)

Today's Reading
1 John 3:16-24
16 This is how we know love: Jesus laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 But if someone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but refuses to help—how can the love of God dwell in a person like that? 18 Little children, let’s not love with words or speech but with action and truth. 19 This is how we will know that we belong to the truth and reassure our hearts in God’s presence. 20 Even if our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hearts and knows all things. 21 Dear friends, if our hearts don’t condemn us, we have confidence in relationship to God. 22 We receive whatever we ask from him because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. 23 This is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love each other as he commanded us. 24 Those who keep his commandments dwell in God and God dwells in them. This is how we know that he dwells in us, because of the Spirit he has given us.

Thought for the Day
God’s generosity inspires me to serve others.

Community volunteers

Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. - 1 John 3:18 (NIV)

On Saturday mornings, I help sort, pack, and distribute food to people in need in our community. Grocery stores, bakeries, restaurants, and residential facilities set aside food that volunteers pick up daily and deliver to 19 distribution sites throughout the city. Through this program, hungry people in our town can receive nourishing food with no questions asked. Volunteers are allowed to take a food box for their own families or a neighbor.

Earlier this year my husband had major surgery, and I stopped volunteering so I could care for him. I knew I would miss seeing my friends weekly, but I would also miss the box of food, which was a big help to us living on a fixed income. However, I was surprised and grateful when Jane, another volunteer, brought us a box of groceries every week while my husband was recovering. Her kindness made me realize how important this program really is.

Life isn’t easy for any of us, but we all can ease another person’s burden. Ephesians 2:10 reminds us that “we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works.” God gives us the privilege of serving one another with whatever skills we have. Each day provides opportunities to invest our time and talent in other people’s lives and show Christ’s love.

Today's Prayer
Dear God, open our eyes to see opportunities to serve others. Thank you for giving us willing hearts. Amen.

DAILY QUIET TIME WITH GOD
THE BLESSING OF THE LORD
BY IDDI YIRE
Monday, October 07, 2024.

Study verse: Proverbs 10:22 "The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it."

The Bible teaches us that the blessing of the Lord makes a person rick without sorrow.
Proverbs 10:22 "The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it."
The blessings of the Lord comes in the form of peace, wealth, good health, long life and prosperity. According to the Bible, God promises he will bless our lives if we obey him.

Deuteronomy 28:1-2 "1 And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: 2 And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God."

One of the reasons God blesses us is for us to be a blessing unto others.

Genesis 12:2 "And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:"
Another reason is that God enjoys blessing his people.

Jeremiah 32:41 "Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul."

When we seek the face of God, he will bless us. However, be mindful that the blessings of God comes through obedience to his commandments.
Job 36:11 "If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures."

Prayers: Ask God to bless you.

October is Cancer Awareness Month, a time when we join hands and hearts to raise awareness about the fight against cancer. As a church community, we stand in solidarity with those who have been impacted by this disease—survivors, fighters, caregivers, and families. We pray for strength, comfort, and hope, trusting in God's healing power and unending grace.

Together, let us commit to early detection, support for those undergoing treatment, and encouragement to all affected by cancer. Let us also honor the memories of those who have lost their battles, remembering their courage and the love they shared.

As we wear ribbons and engage in awareness activities this month, may we be reminded of Psalm 46:1, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." Let us continue to be that strength for one another.
