๐ŸŽƒ This Halloween, let's unravel a spooky tale that brings us closer to our own roots, right here in Hungary! ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡บ

Many believe that the art of pumpkin carving is an American tradition, but its origins trace back to ancient Hungary. Let me take you on a journey to the time of King Solomon.

In 1081, Solomon, a contender for the Hungarian throne, conceded the crown to Lรกszlรณ but secretly harbored ambitions to regain it. To ensure Solomon's confinement, Lรกszlรณ ordered him locked in the tower of Visegrรกd Castle. The night's eerie glow emanated from pumpkin lanterns strategically placed to keep an eye on the imprisoned pretender. These lanterns also served as guiding lights for travelers on the Danube.

As legend has it, sailors would exclaim, "It shines like Solomon's crown!" when they spotted these lanterns. These carved pumpkins symbolized both security and a guiding light during dark times.

This Halloween, as Heroes Square in Budapest hosted a spectacular Pumpkin Festival, let's remember that pumpkin carving isn't just an American pastime; it's a part of our own rich history. Let's celebrate this ancient tradition and shine our own light in the darkness. ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŽƒ

Low Water has its interesting facts

The ominous name is not accidental - the formation at the foot of Gellรฉrt Hill becomes visible when the water level is low, indicating times of drought.

Its best-known name is Dearth Rock. The height of the formation above sea level is 95.76 meters. It emerges from the water when the water level does not even reach 95 centimeters.

If you are looking for the deepest point in Budapest, this place also comes up as one of the possible, even surface points. It is not for nothing that it is called "the lowest mountain peak in Hungary".

It is easy to spot even standing on the Liberty (green) Bridge. The exact location is at 1645.4 river kilometers. In recent decades, it appeared in September 2003, November 2011, September 2015 and 2018. Due to the arid weather, it was free from the end of summer until late autumn - at that time, it also set an absolute negative record with 33 centimeters, and we saw it last year in August.

This is not the only strange thing that appears in the riverbed during low water. The gravestones with German inscriptions caused great consternation at first. One of the nearby local cemeteries, which was opened at the end of the 19th century, was destroyed by WWII. It was liquidated after World War II and only those graves that the relatives explicitly requested were moved to other cemeteries. The rest of the tombstones were, therefore, crushed and poured into the Danube to support the coastal part.

A walking tour in the Buda Castle is not just a regular tour. Still, you can discover the layers in time and geographically. In addition, there are legends to discover and riddles to solve.
The Church of Our Lady of Buda Castle was built in the middle of the 13th century. After several reconstructions and additions, it acquired its final medieval form in 1470, with the construction of the southern bell tower. It was then that the coat of arms of King Matthias was added to it, which was found during the 19th-century reconstruction walled in the southwest window of the tower's third floor. The coat of arms, decorated with a raven holding a ring in the middle, was placed inside the building after its demolition and reconstruction, where it can still be seen today. And a copy was put in its original place. In the 19th century, the building was referred to as the Matthias' Tower and then the Matthias Church because of the coat of arms seen from afar. Interestingly, the same jacket of components can be found on the courtyard facade of the Military History Institute and Museum, with some differences above the Matthias Well.

The Gerbeaud is undoubtedly one of the most famous gastronomic assets of Hungary. It is a lovely gift, but it is also a serious responsibility and a big challenge to manage such a business - while preserving traditions, constantly being renewed. The Gerbeaud legend began with Kugler Henrik in 1858.
Gerbeaudโ€™s extraordinary talent and enterprising spirit gave the business added impetus and accounted for the unique success story of Gerbeaud. He took on a significant number of new employees in both sales and service.
ร‰mile Gerbeaud was the one who introduced to the Hungarian market the catโ€™s tongue chocolate and the cognac cherry bonbon. The name Gerbeaud became internationally well-known and celebrated.

This significant anniversary is being celebrated in various ways, one of which is a pretty and colorful flowerbed representing the city's unity. The Rumbach Street Synagogue was built in the Moorish Revival style at the end of the 19th century. It has eight sides and has recently been restored in 2021.
