Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) explained why the cost of conducting elections in Nigeria is high, PM News reports.

He said this on Friday when he appeared at the ‘The Editors’ Forum’ in Lagos. It was organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors at De Rembrandt Hotel, Awolowo Way Ikeja, Lagos.

He listed some of the reasons as “cost of logistics, highly-secured ballot papers, allowances for personnel and others.”

In his words: “In France, the ballot paper is like an A4 sheet of paper, because it is unthinkable that anybody in France will sn**ch the ballot paper.

“But here in Nigeria, we print ballots papers in currency quality and we entrust them to the Central Bank of Nigeria.

“The ballot papers will now be moved with all the protocols and security according to the movement of the national currency, just to protect the process.

“This is not going to be done cheaply. So, we pay for lack of trust in the system,” the INEC boss said.

He added, though, that Nigeria’s elections were not the most expensive, “if the entire cost was spread per head of the voting population, projected to be about 95 million.”

He said that the last elections conducted in Ghana, Kenya and Guinea-Bissau were more expensive if the voters’ population was considered per capita in relation to the cost.

“The cost in Nigeria, I think, is nine dollars per head (N4, 500) as against what happens in other countries. Ours is not even the most expensive.

“The cost of elections in Nigeria in 2023 is N305 billion of the national budget of over N17 trillion.

“The cost of elections is just 1.8 per cent, not even up to two per cent of the national budget.

“If we remove the technology cost, 60 per cent of the cost of elections in Nigeria is spent on logistics and personnel allowances,” he said.

NECO don release 2022 SSCE results

The National Examinations Council has released the 2022 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination results.

NECO Registrar, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, announced the results on Thursday at the NECO Headquarters in Minna, Niger State.

Aside from the results, Wushishi said the council blacklisted 29 supervisors for their alleged involvement in various malpractice offences.

He also said four schools were recommended for de-recognition for two years over consistent malpractices.

Meanwhile, Wushishi revealed that the council recorded a decline in malpractice in the 2022 internal senior school certificate examinations as against other years.

According to him, the decline in malpractice during the examination was appreciable.

In the area of malpractices, 13, 595 were caught as against 20, 003 in year 2021, which showed appreciable decline in number of malpractices cases.”

“Twenty nine supervisors were blacklisted for various offended ranging from poor supervision, insult, aiding and abetting during the examinations”.

Dantani gave the number of candidates that registered for the Examinations as 1, 209, 703 while 1, 198, 412 sat for the examination.

He further stated that the number of candidates who got five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics is 727, 864 representing 60.74 per cent.

Dantani also added that the number of candidates with special needs is 1, 031 adding that 98 with albinism, 177 with autism, 574 with hearing impairments and 107 are visually impaired.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has warned applicants against patronising fake job portals as “the service is currently not conducting any recruitment exercise.”

In a statement NaijNaira got hold of, the Comptroller General of NIS, Isah Idris, noted that the fake portals are calculated ploys by job scammers to deceive and defraud applicants.

He said unsuspecting job seekers are currently being required to visit a certain portal to apply and are later redirected to a link where they would be expected to make some payments.

Mr Jere had earlier disclosed plans to recruit additional 5,000 personnel into the service over inadequate personnel.

The Comptroller General, who stated this recently in Jigawa during a condolence visit to the families of one of his officers killed by gunmen, said the request has just been sent to President Muhammadu Buhari and that the agency was awaiting approval.

Speaking on the activities of the scammers, the immigration boss said: “These reports including the portal are NOT only false but are also calculated ploys to deceive and defraud unsuspecting job seekers into parting away with their hard-earned resources.

“The Service is currently NOT conducting any recruitment exercise and therefore members of the public are, by this notice, enjoined to ignore such publications to avoid falling into the antics of job scammers.”

Mr Idris also reiterated that recruitment is free and that the service only uses its verified social media platforms and official website to announce any recruitment exercise.

He urged the public to “completely ignore such spurious publications of recruitment exercise into the Service to avoid being defrauded by unscrupulous and deceitful elements out there.”

He also assured that deliberate efforts are being made to get those behind such fraudulent recruitment activities and bring them before the law.
