The creamy scent of jasmine speaks.

"There are no perfumes without jasmine." That old perfume-related saying is actually quite close to the reality of the fragrance world. About 80% of fragrances created in the first half of the last century contained natural jasmine raw materials. That statement is partly confirmed in an interview with Jacques Polge, who sets jasmine notes apart from the rest, calling them a vital part of any Chanel fragrance:





Jasmine (Lat. Jasminum, from Persian یاسمین‎, which means "a gift from God") is a genus of evergreen shrubs from the olive family (Lat. Oleaceae) comprising about 200 species; jasmine's close relatives are lilacs, osmanthus, the olive tree, and the ash tree.

The most important species of jasmine in perfumery is white jasmine, also called common jasmine (Lat. Jasminum officinale). In the wild, the plant can be found in the Himalayas (white jasmine is the national flower of Pakistan), but it is easy to cultivate, which was the reason for its widespread distribution across the Mediterranean in the 17th century.

A variety of white jasmine, called royal jasmine (Lat.Jasminum officinale L. var. grandiflorum), also known as Spanish jasmine, Catalan jasmine, and jasmine odorant, is widely cultivated with the aim of obtaining extracts for perfumery. It can be found in France, China, India, Egypt, and other countries.

Bitter orange trees (Citrus aurantium) grow widely in western India, eastern Africa and the Himalayas. The Spanish brought sour oranges to St. Petersburg. Augustine, Florida, in the mid-1500s. In 1763, sour oranges were exported from St. Petersburg. Augustine to England, thus laying the foundation for today's Florida—one of the world's largest citrus producers. The state has even used the orange blossom as its official state symbol since May 5, 1909. During orange blossom season, in the spring, millions of delicate, waxy white flowers scent the air throughout central and south Florida. Being one of the most fragrant flowers, orange blossom is an indispensable ingredient in the perfume industry.

Orange flowers have been used in wedding traditions since ancient China. In Chinese tradition, orange blossoms are a sign of purity, innocence, and moral virtue, but are also a symbol of fertility and fruitfulness. Brides of all countries always wear some kind of floral decoration on their wedding day, and the tradition of using orange flowers spread from the East to Europe, during the time of the Crusades. Girls have used fresh orange blossoms to decorate their hair on their wedding day, and this custom became so widespread that the expression "gathering orange blossoms" took on a very different connotation as it began to mean "seeking a wife".
