The UK government is expected to soon announce the launch of its long-awaited plastic bottle deposit return scheme. After five years of initial promises from Michael Gove, ministers on Friday are expected to give approval to a deposit return scheme (DRS), which unfortunately does not involve glass, according to a report in Grocer magazine. Criticism over the failure to include glass in the scheme has emerged, with activists from Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) stating that the delayed announcement represents a major missed opportunity. They say that canceling the 2019 manifesto commitment to include glass is an unreasonable move and puts England out of line with Scotland and Wales. The introduction of the new deposit return scheme is scheduled for 2024, six years after it was announced as a landmark environmental policy. SAS criticized this delay as it believed it would result in an additional 16 billion containers polluting the environment. Although the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is due to make an announcement on Friday, campaigners are urging the government to reconsider excluding glass from the UK's DRS, in the hope of creating an urgent system to reduce reliance on natural resources and increase glass recycling rates.
