GOODBYE!
A good story has a beginning, a middle and an end.
Our story began in California almost 30 years ago. Chapters were written in Wisconsin and Florida. The bulk of the adventures have been in Ireland with short diversions to the UK and China. We now come to a happy ending as Barbara retires and Seamus moves on to an entirely different venture.
We send our best wishes to the educators and speech and language specialists who continue to use Mouthercise and Builders Club to engage children in effective and enjoyable communication.
If you wish to contact us, you can do so by email to [email protected]
Sincerely yours,
Barbara and Seamus Hallahan

What You Taught Me About My Son - Video On Demand - NHK WORLD - English This program is about the heartfelt interaction between Naoki Higashida, the autistic author of "The Reason I Jump", and fellow author David Mitchell who translated the book and whose son is autistic.
We've been doing a bit of hibernating lately. Needs must. However we wanted to share this vital info: https://www.wired.com/2011/01/the-5-best-toys-of-all-time/
The 5 Best Toys of All Time Here at GeekDad we review a lot of products — books, toys, gadgets, software — and I know it’s impossible for most parents to actually afford all of the cool stuff that gets written up. Heck, most of us can’t afford it either, and we’re envious of the person who scored a review copy of \[?...
We met this delightful young man who was on a panel discussing growing up and finding your career while living with autism. His story is remarkable and his solution to his food issues is inspiring. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=chasenyurface

We have had a very busy few days at the ASHA Convention in Los Angeles. In addition to our three talks on various aspects of communication we have met some inspiring speech therapists, occupational therapists and educators.
The team will be busy come Autumn.

Some special needs assistants and teachers in Ireland are providing excellent support similar to this. There are no speech therapists supporting schools at this level in Ireland, though.

We wrapped up Builder's Club for this school year. A good time was had by all. Many new friendships as well as new skills were developed. We spent most of the last block of sessions outside with some fabulous friends from Crossfit Solas. Hand eye coordination and lots of running was included in the fun. We also created fantasy characters with the colourful spandex fabrics. Builders is all about developing genuine relationships spontaneously and honestly through shared interests and activities. for more information about running your own Builders Club, go to www.marvellousmouth.ie

Returning to school
Jumping in or tip toe-ing?
The first weeks back can be high drama.
For some parents it is worse when the children transition smoothly because they wait anxiously for the shoe to drop. It might not drop at all, so try to stay calm!
Either way: dragging them in kicking and screaming or watching them skip happily into the halls of education, we need to wait a few weeks for the settling process to occur before seeking out teacher’s meetings, expert advice or smelling salts, or to assume that it will be smooth sailing from here on out.
If you have concerns, keep a diary of the first few weeks, and think back on the two weeks before school started so that you can place the first weeks of school into a continuum. Make sure you consider more than just your child’s or the teacher’s behaviour. Put it in context and be sure to jot down things that are going well before you jot down the snags. Try to find at least two reasons for the difficulties, one environmental/circumstantial and the other based on the personalities involved. Try to see the incidents from each person’s perspective.
This information will help you and your child solve some things independently (and benefit even more from the good stuff that is happening). If you need support, you will have the information for the support person ready for them. They will appreciate this and be able to help you more effectively and quickly.
Happy school days from the team at Marvellous Mouth.
