A huge day for our U16A girls at the home of Cork basketball today as they overcame a spirited and always competitive Bantry side to progress of All Ireland Club Championships (AICC) in Co. Meath in a few weeks time.
The girls were out of the blocks quickly and managed to keep the lead throughout with excellent defence and some measured offence, with all players playing their part in a total team effort.
The next few weeks will be busy for the girls as we continue in the league, championship and AICC’s, but they will meet it head on and with total commitment as always… a huge thanks as always to the parents and family members for the ever-present support. 👍🏀

Team: Carla Bonfill, Lydia Kahn, Eva Murphy, Emma O’Keeffe, Sarahrose Walsh, Sally Palmer, Leah O’Connell, Leah Duggan, Lucy O’Shea, Katie Tarrant, Eve Daly Brennan, Ruby O’Rourke (not pictured, injured).

Best of luck to our U16A girls who have an AICC qualifier playoff game today. The girls will play Bantry in Neptune stadium in a game which has a 2 pm tip-off. The winners will take part in the All Ireland Club Championship on the weekend of the 9th and 10th April. The girls would love your support this afternoon.

On a dry, but cold and breezy day in Muskerry Rugby Football grounds Ballyanley, East met West in the Munster u18.5 cup semifinals. Pirates’ opposition coming from Bandon Rugby.
On the occasion of any semifinal, nerves and tension are to be expected, however none were evident from either team as they literally went at each other in attack from the Bandon k.o,
Cobh were asked to defend with all of their might for the opening 10 minutes, the only attack coming from a clever chip and chase from captain and outhalf Aaron Quirke. On this occasion flying winger Adam Lynch was stopped short of the corner by the try line. Ben Murphy was to the fore of the Pirates defence working exceptionally hard at every breakdown and gaining some valuable turnovers. On the 13th minute as Pirates worked their way up the field, against the wind, a snippet of space was exploited by Quirke for a fantastic solo try, his first of the day. His 35m run found the whitewash under the Bandon posts, giving Adam Lynch the best conversion opportunity. Though in the very strong wind nothing was taken for granted, the ball held in place by Mark ORourke to add his first 2 points, and edge Pirates 7.0 to the fore.
On the halfway point of the opening half, ben Murphy was to affect another turnover, giving Pirates some possession to work with. The resulting phases saw Murphy take a pop pass on the perfect angle to carve up the center line and touch down for Pirates 2nd try, Lynch adding the 2 points.
Bandon came back at Pirates from the kickoff and worked some great phases to be held up over the line by some valiant defending by the Pirates pack. The resulting restart allowed Casey Whelan to stretch his legs, the sideline saving another try from Pirates. Murphy was to effect yet another turnover soon after, setting free Adam Lynch to get himself onto the try list in the corner and bring Pirates to 19 points. The first half ended with a last try effort, again the touch like saving the score board as the half time whistle went.
The 2nd half resumed as the first half ended, with Pirates attacking at every opportunity. A superb break by Jack Worral with 4 minutes gone saw Aaron Quirke in support to cross over for his 2nd of the day, Lynch tapping over the 2 points to stretch the lead to 26 points. Bandon came back straight away with their opening try in the corner from a well worked set piece.
From the restart, Bandon returned the ball with a chip through, Sean Edogbo covering serious ground at pace to be first to the ball and securing it for Pirates. 4 minutes later Bandon were to get in the same corner for their 2nd try, using some change in directions from the base of a scrum. With the scoreline now 26-10 Pirates settled back into phase building and great break from Sean down the wing , feeding Quirke to race down the line. The Bandon defence scrambled and halted this attack, the result being a Pirates scrum. Edogbo, now cranking up the meters carried, broke from the base with Quirke running a brilliant line of support to cut back in and secure his hat trick, Lynch again tapping over to add the full compliment. 33-10 with just over 10 minutes to go. Bandon rallied admirably using their bench and forward pack to get back on the score board. Crossing for 3 tries in the last quarter of the game plus stoppage, the final score 33-25 in Pirates favour.
An absolute fantastic game, with pace and power from both sides. Thanks very much to Bandon for the great game and the best of luck in the remainder of the season.
Pirates now eagerly await the Munster Cup Final (how good does that sound!) on April 2nd in Musgrave Park. Our photo shows some of todays squad a "few" years back as they progressed through the mini age grades, tag away lads !

Stop the clock... It's catch-up time!

Or indeed, if you're Ava or Aisling, it's hammer-time.
The Irish Life Schools National XC Championships took place in Mallusk, situated on the northern outskirts of Belfast, County Antrim, last weekend. Over 900 talented athletes took part, with every one of them having earned their qualifications the hard way through both regional and then provincial deciders.

A 5 hour road trip to this prestigious event did anything but deter Ava and Aisling, who were part of a 5 girl team.
Both of these young ladies showed up to be counted and, along with their hard-working teammates, most certainly put the hammer down, grafting out a superb 3rd placed team position and podium places for all. That's right, the 3rd fastest in the nation! A phenomenonal achievement - we're so proud of your efforts, Aisling and Ava, National Junior Cross Country Bronze Medallists, both.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the Killeagh 4 Mile Road Race was taking place, being hosted by Killeagh Community Healthy Clubs Project, with the assistance of Youghal A.C.
Changing and shower facilities provided along with refreshments served indoors were the order of the day - signs of a very pleasant and welcome post-Covid atmosphere, akin to the racing scene pre-March 2020.

Cruising through the course like a luxury yacht, and straight into a saucy 2 mile uphill headwind from the off, Ber Navin put her weekly club speed sessions to good use with a very impressive run that will stand her in good stead as she readies for her sortie at the upcoming Sonia O'Sullivan Cobh 10.
It was on. It was on like Maud Gonne.
His customary pre-race honey latte consumed, Eoin Downing was fully pepped and prepped.
Mixing it up with the big boys and girls, our long-legged Downing started like he meaned to finish - front and centre from the starter's pistol. Eoin put in a top-notch performance, hitting an average 5:21 minute per mile and a seismic 90 second personal best to cement an outstanding 7th place overall for himself. Hup ya boya.

Best wishes to all our Club members, players, coaches & supporters for St. Patrick's Day 2022 !!

Lots of rugby over the Bank Holiday weekend for the Pirates' youth teams.

The big game is the U18.5 Munster Clubs Cup Semi-final v Bandon RFC on Saturday, at Muskerry RFC, Ballyanley, with a 1pm KO.
All support greatly appreciated and the very best of luck to the players and coaches.

The 16s travel away again this weekend looking to bounce back in the South Munster League after the heartache of the Munster Clubs Cup last weekend.

Sunday's rugby is provided by the 13s, at 11am in the Paddocks, lets get a good crowd out to support the lads in the local derby against Midleton RFC.

And to start the week off, no better way than a Monday night under lights in the Paddocks, when the 14s host Douglas RFC.

Again, best of luck to all teams, and we look forward to seeing you at the games over the weekend.🏉☠️🏴‍☠️

Great feature about our sponsored Cobh Ramblers FC player David O'Leary by Barbara O'Connell EchoLive.ie

David O’Leary and Cobh Ramblers ready for derby with Cork City

Experienced midfielder can't wait for this Friday's clash at St Colman's Park

RELISHING his return to League of Ireland football, Cobh Ramblers Dave O’Leary is confident his side can turn things around and move up the table and he hopes this can start in Friday’s local derby against Cork City.

The former Avondale midfielder signed for Stuart Ashton’s side this season and although he didn’t expect a return to the LOI, he is thoroughly enjoying it with a great bunch of lads.

“To be honest, I didn’t think I’d have the opportunity but luckily enough, Stuart and I had a chat before pre-season started and I came in to train with the team,” said O’Leary.

“Thankfully, I signed and I am delighted to be playing with Cobh which is a great club.

“The side have gelled really well together. All hard-working lads who want to do well for the manager and club.

“It’s been a tough start for us. If we were playing poorly and losing, we couldn’t complain but the fact is I think we have only been outplayed once this year and that was against UCD and the rest of the games I felt we should have won or got something out of.

“We just need to keep doing what we are doing and get a bit of luck maybe and there’s no reason why we can’t move up that table.”

The father of one from Blackrock played most of his career with Avondale however he also had spells with College Corinthians, Limerick and Cork City.

All of which helped him gain a lot of experience and helped his development as a player.

“I started off my football days with Avondale where I stayed up until U15s when I moved to College Corinthians."

He was called up to the Irish squad at U17 level and played in the European Championships in Luxembourg.

From that squad, you’d the likes of John Egan, Shane Duffy, Jeff Hendrick who all play in the Premier League today. It was a great experience for me to play with and against some top players.

“From there, I was asked to join Limerick FC U20 squad but was fortunate to get the opportunity due to injuries and suspension to make my senior debut against Cork City in a 2-1 win in Turner’s Cross and then I stayed with the first team.

“Pat Scully was the man in charge back then and I was very lucky that he gave me that chance at the age of 17. I gained a lot of experience during my time at the club.

“At Limerick, I was fortunate enough to win the First Division title in 2012 with a fantastic team.

“I then moved to Cork City and again I enjoyed my time there. We were unlucky to be beaten on the last day of the season against Dundalk to win the Premier Division."

He has many great memories, including picking up a runners-up medal in the EA Sports final against St Pat’s with Galway losing out on penalties.

Having spent time away in Australia, O’Leary returned at the perfect time when he hooked up with Avondale once again and here he was set to pick up more silverware.

“When I moved back from Australia, there was only half the season left and Avondale were still in the Intermediate Cup to which we went on a win that year.

It was a great experience playing in the Aviva with some great players. I have always loved playing with the club and to win an Intermediate Cup with my schoolboy club was a dream really.
“Playing in the Munster Senior League has been fantastic as it is a very competitive league with some fantastic players and management.

“It’s a tough league in the MSL as nobody runs away with the league and it’s nearly a different winner each year which shows how competitive it is.

“This competitiveness has kept me in the game this long and it certainly prepares me for the return to LOI football.

“Playing in the First Division of LOI is tough but the competitiveness of the MSL made the transition that little bit easier."

TOUGH TEST

This year’s First Division is probably the most competitive it’s been in years.

“Teams who may or may not have been expected to do well are picking up points against expected challengers and that shows how funny this division is.

“We know that if you get three or four wins in a row, you could be challenging for a league so we just need to stay focused on the job ahead.

“There is a good mixture of 'old and youth'. I probably would be considered old at this stage and I’m just 28 but it’s good that I can pass on some experience of what it’s like to challenge for trophies to some of the younger lads.

“Ian Turner also has done it all so between us, I believe there’s a good balance within the team.

“Every game we strive to get a result and the lads are really working hard to achieve this.

“We are looking forward to the derby on Friday, however, it will be like every other game where we will try give it 100% and do our best to get three points.”
