While researching the Summer Revels that ran throughout the 1970s and 80s at Cork Opera House, the photographs of Gerard O’Meara kept coming up across various archives. O’Meara was born in Cork City in 1944 and lives in Mallow. He took up photography at the age of 14 and received his first professional commission just four years later. Over his long and varied career, theatre and fashion photography have remained closest to his heart. O’Meara photographed the Summer Revels from its first performances in 1971 to 1975. In July 2024 he generously donated the images you see here to Cork Opera Houses’ collection. Performers pictured include Michael and Marie Twomey, Frank Duggan, Billa O’Connell, Paddy Comerford, Frank Twomey, Noel Frost, David McInerney, Val Niggli, and The Montfort Singers. Let us know the faces and characters you recognise from these images - we would love to hear from you! The full set of images gifted by Mr O’Meara are on view at Cork Opera House throughout the run of Summer Revels!
