‘Anita O’Day Tribute’ CONCERT - DOORS 8pm
+
JAZZ MASTERCLASS - 6pm until 7.30pm

🚨INFO ABOUT THE CONCERT

Lineup:
Sonia Ziccardi - Voice
Vittorio Solimene - Piano

‘Ziccardi & Solimene Duo will omage Anita O’Day, one of the most important, iconic
and versatile figure of all Jazz history, playing some songs by her repertoire.
Ain’t misbehavin, Them there eyes, Love for sale, Rosetta are just some of the songs
that this singer of Irish origins interpreted with great mastery and sense of rhythm,
reasons why she was much loved.
The duo will also enrich their repertoire of the night with some original compositions.

🚨INFO ABOUT THE MASTERCLASS:

Time: 6PM UNTIL 7.30PM
‘Open to all those who want to delve deeper into Jazz music generally and the interaction between two instruments: voice and piano.
The duo is a very intimate, naked dimension. When it works, it’s because a certain alchemy is created.
In the piano and voice duo, very popular in Jazz music, the pianist plays a great role: he accompanies, becomes an imaginary orchestra and, at the same time, enjoys space and freedom. A sensitive pianist can help a voice enormously by breathing with her way to create melodic designs, listening to its way of phrasing and so on. The duo is a wonderful way to practice mutual listening.’

So, come to ‘draw’ your way of feeling music with us.

LULU'S JAZZ CLUB - Whelan's 08/04/2024

📣 On Tuesday 16th of April Lulu’s Jazz Club in invites, from Naples, for the… ‘GERRY MULLIGAN & COOL JAZZ TRIBUTE’ with
ANDREA ABBADIA & IRISH TRIO
🎫 TICKETS HERE👉🏽 https://www.whelanslive.com/event/lulus-jazz-club-16-04-2024/

LINEUP:
Andrea Abbadia - Baritone Sax

Chris Guilfoyle - Guitar

Cormac O’Brien - Bass

Dominic Mullan - Drums

‘Andrea Abbadia’s homage to Cool Jazz is not only a tribute to the great saxophonist, but a revival of cool jazz, which, while making some of the acquisitions of the revolutionary bebop its own, provides a more relaxed version, in some ways singable, devoid of some harmonic harshness and with less convoluted melodic lines, with not a few references to classical music. The performance favors the tempos and the middle registers and creates atmospheres that are sometimes very rarefied: the rhythm sections weave soft and swinging carpets for the improvisations of the soloists who, seem to want to “discuss” in a calm way around an interesting topic. While maintaining the typical energy of boppers, the performance does not flaunt the extraordinary technical qualities of the musicians, but is in favor of the construction of singable melodic lines, concealing the signs of fatigue and effort. It is a style that rediscovers the melodic content of jazz, and prefers a more relaxed dimension of rhythms. Most of the pieces are from the repertoire of the Gerry Mulligan quartet, the choice to include the guitar gives the concert that necessary character of modernity, the combination of the sounds of the baritone and the guitar excites the audience. Playing this repertoire with Irish musicians is stimulating and productive, and gives the concert the international and liberating character that jazz can give.
The quartet will also enrich their repertoire of the night with some original compositions.’

👇🏽
‘Earl Rudolph "Bud" Powell was an American jazz pianist and composer. A pioneer in the development of bebop, jazz critics have commented that his compositions and playing style "greatly extended the range of jazz harmony," and his application of complex bebop phrasing to the piano influenced both his contemporaries and later pianists including Walter Davis, Jr., Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Barry Harris. Although a severe beating by police in 1945, followed by years of electroconvulsive therapy treatments and hospitalization, impacted his health during the latter half of his career, he continued to compose, record, and perform until shortly before his death in 1966. In the decades following his death, his career and life story became the inspiration for films and written works, including Bertrand Tavernier's Round Midnight Many Powell compositions, including "Un Poco Loco", "Bouncing with Bud", and "Parisian Thoroughfare", have become jazz standards. Join this fabulous quintet for an evening of Bud Powell’s music.’

‘A journey between Jazz, Neo Soul, Italian Music and Brazilian Rhythms’

On Tuesday 28th of November the founder and curator of the entire Lulu’s Jazz Club series, Luisa Annibali with her Quartet, takes the stage presenting her Single that will be released on Friday 15th of December on all platforms.

Lulù is the nickname of Luisa Annibali, an Italian-born singer and songwriter living in Dublin and performing both in Ireland and Italy.

Luisa Annibali is one of the leading lights in the newest generation of jazz musicians on the Dublin jazz scene. Having moved from Rome to Dublin in 2016, she has quickly established herself in the scene with her boundless enthusiasm and vocal prowess. She blends music from her native Italy with Brazilian tinges and contemporary jazz making ample room for her distinctive voice to shine through.
Very active in the jazz community, she got her BA in ‘Jazz and Contemporary Music Performance’ from the Dublin City University just 2 years ago.

Her new track ‘My Own Paradise’ is a perfect example of her own personal take on jazz music, mixing feminist themes in her lyrics with contemporary jazz undertones reminiscent of artists such as Esperanza Spalding and Gretchen Parlat. The music feels fresh and cutting edge while never losing sight of its roots in the jazz standard repertoire.

Her music naturally compound different styles of music, exploring Jazz, Neo Soul, Funky, Brazilian music, and Free Jazz.
Indeed, it is the encounter between people from different cultures and musical influences that makes her music and her performances so unique.’
