Symptoms of hand, foot and mouth are similar in adults and children, but usually worse in children under 5 years.

It’s possible to get hand, foot and mouth disease more than once, though subsequent infections are typically less severe.

Treatment tips for children:

- Drink plenty of fluids; avoid acidic drinks like fruit juice
- Eat soft foods such as soup, mashed potatoes, vegetables, smoothies, and ice cream. Avoid hot, spicy, and acidic foods like tomatoes and citrus fruits
- Rinse mouth with warm, salty water (only if the child is old enough to spit it out)
- For fever or discomfort, give paracetamol or ibuprofen (only if the child is older than 3 months)
All information has been gathered from HSE.ie

Back to School season is upon us. It’s important to be aware of the steps to take if you think your child may have headlice.

Treat headlice as soon as you spot them. Some lotions and sprays come with a comb to remove dead lice and eggs and some treatments need to be repeated after a week to kill any newly hatched lice.

Check the pack to see if they’re safe for you or your child and how to use them. If lotions or sprays do not work, speak to our pharmacist about other treatments.

The three stages of chickenpox usually refer to the way the rash looks:

- Stage 1 is a red and bumpy rash. This can last a few days
- Stage 2 is a fluid-filled blistered rash. The blisters break open after about one to two days
- Stage 3 is when the blisters scab over. This stage also lasts a few days

Even though the rash goes through three stages, you could have all types of bumps at the same time. This means some bumps can be forming while others are already breaking open. The entire rash can last up to about 10 days.

Pop into a member of the team for help and advice on how to tackle chickenpox in your home. All products are subject to availability in your local StayWell Pharmacy and alternatives may be advised by pharmacy staff.
