Delighted to learn that the National Library of Ireland have acquired a set of the Tarot as Gaeilge - I have spend many an afternoon in their wonderful Yeats exhibition poring over Yeats’ notebooks. Fr Mark Patrick Hederman’s research tells us that Yeats shared his notebook sketches with Pamela Colman Smith during the concept stage of her vision for the deck.

I am heart-sick while reading reports of the Russian invasion of the Ukraine. Such senseless violence beggars belief. It’s not much, but I am donating all proceeds from sales of the Irish Tarot for the rest of March to the Irish Red Cross who are working with their partners in the Ukraine during this conflict. I don’t know how else to help. 😢 Praying for peace in the Ukraine, and other war-torn regions.

Pamela Colman Smith took inspiration for much of the imagery in the Tarot from her time with the Lyceum Theatre. Many of the cards capture the magic and illusion of a stage play. Her close friend Ellen Terry, and her daughter Edy Craig, were particularly influential. Ellen Terry’s Lady Macbeth inspired the Queen of Swords, and Edy Craig and her cat Snuffles can be seen in the Queen of Wands.

The Irish Rider Waite Tarot will officially launch on the 1st of February 2022, the first day of spring, halfway between the winter solstice and spring equinox. Known in Ireland as both Imbolc and Saint Brigid’s day, next year’s festival will have particular significance as it will become a public holiday that honours Brigid for the first time, thanks to the phenomenal campaigning by .
