Because King David is readily associated with the City of David and Jerusalem, we sometimes overlook that he made Hebron his first capital city; he ruled from there for seven and a half years and had six children. He was also anointed king at Hebron twice: by the Judahites (2 Sam 2:4), and by the elders of all Israel (2 Sam 5:3).
The ancient city of Hebron has had some archaeological excavations since 1964, but not nearly as many as one would expect for the second-most-important city to Judaism and the fourth-most-important to Islam. Scholars have found that Hebron was a well-fortified city during parts of the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. That is not surprising considering its height. At an elevation of 3,051', Hebron sits higher than any other city in the region (including Jerusalem) and would be easily defensible.
