Is it time for a colour? Whether that’s a eyebrow or eyelash colour? If so, care must always be taken by the salon professional that you are visiting to ensure you are safe. Most salons have a strict policy when it comes to patch testing, especially with new clients. You may not feel this is worth it, but even if you have been colouring your eyebrows/lashes for a long time, a reaction could happen at any time! Some people are prone to a skin reaction called contact dermatitis. This means their skin becomes red, dry and irritated (inflamed) when they come into contact with a particular substance. The substance may either be an irritant, directly damaging the skin, or an allergen, triggering an allergic reaction that affects the skin. What is Patch testing? Patch testing is essential to ensure that the active ingredient within colour does not cause an allergic reaction. Patch testing is a procedure used by stylists and therapists before applying colour to the scalp or facial area. It is a simple and safe way of identifying whether the dye will cause an allergic reaction with the skin. Whilst it may be a little inconvenient to visit your salon 48 hours before your appointment, it is essential to ensure your safety. This usually involves dabbing a small amount of the colour with developer behind your ear or on your inner elbow and leaving it to dry. You will be asked to leave the colour for at least 24-48 hours. If you develop any irritation or feel unwell after the patch test, please let your salon know ASAP. If your stylist or therapist is requesting that you come in to the salon for a skin/patch test before your service, please be respectful and cooperative with them. They are asking you to do this for your own safety, so that they can make sure you will not experience a reaction to the colour they will be applying.
