Portlaoise College - Young Scientist Entry 2017
Portlaoise College - Young Scientist project 2017 - We aim to investigate and analyse bottled vs. mains water through scientific and sensory analysis
We are three students from secoond year in Portlaoise College. Our names are Emma Lynch, Saorcha Lawlor and Ben O' Rourke. We are delighted to be representing our school in this years BT Young Scientist exhibition in the RDS in January. Our project aims to carry out an analysis of 3 bottled water companies and compare the chemical and mineral content of these waters to the mains water from the areas these companies source their water using chemical and sensory analysis.
Got to meet Ryan Tubridy!!❤ Btyste
All set up!!💙 first round of judging at 3💦
Working hard to finish up our project!!❤ everything's seems to be coming together!!💦 only 1 more day to go!!x nerves kicking in!!💦
Working hard to get the final touches finished on our young scientist project
Thank you Alpha Wireless for the funding to help with our project. We really appreciate it!!!
Thank you so much to Liz and the team in Whitewater for covering the costs of getting our water samples tested and the loan of the test equipment to carry out our own chemical analysis in our school laboratory. We really appreciate it!!!!
We would really appreciate if you could fill out this survey for us. It will on,y a take two minutes of your time and will be a great help to us in putting the results of our project together
In these photos we carried out a sensory analysis with some students in our school. We carried out 3 of these experiments. One with Comeragh sport vs. Clonmel mains. The second one was Ballygowan vs. New Castle West mains. The last one was River Rock vs. Belfast mains. A sensory analysis is an experiment where we asked the students to test a cup of water Which was labeled either a square or circle (mains or bottled water) and test it for 6 attributes which were: aroma, metallic taste, smell, chemical taste, clarity, and aftertaste. They tested each type of water separately. We then gathered and compared our results.💦
In these photos we are testing the pH of our 6 different waters - 3 bottled waters: River Rock, Comeragh Sport, Ballygowan. Our 3 mains waters are from: Belfast, Clonmel and New Castle West. To test for the pH of the water we used universal indicator paper and a digital pH meter.
