This easy-going summer salad is pumped full of nutrients for all stages of menopause and general health for all the family. Let me know if you make it!
π₯ Tuna & chickpea with red onion, tomato, zucchini, garlic and basil. Dress with olive oil and lemon, π season with good quality salt and pepper.
Chickpeas are a nutrition powerhouse packed with fibre (gut health), protein (muscle health), calcium (bone health), vitamin B6, vitamin C, potassium and magnesium.
π£Tinned Tuna is easy to store and contains protein, vitamin B6 which is good for brain health and keeping the nervous system and immune system healthy.
Did you know basil πΏ contains Vit C, calcium and iron? Itβs also very good for gut health.

This video is from two months before our first Yoga Retreat in Croatia when we popped across to Ciovo island for a scouting trip. Laz wanted to check out what local foods were available, and I wanted to take photos of the gorgeous blue Adriatic. π We were delighted to find sea bream locally available. It was on our menu in CafΓ© MED, a restaurant we co-owned and ran in Tenerife as newlyweds.
Sea bream, or Dorada as it is called in Spanish, is a beautiful fish, it's very meaty and filling. This year we purposely picked a different villa that has a big open kitchen so you can see the chef at work and ask questions... he might even answer if he can hear you over his kitchen music!

"Is there anything in there you don't know already?" asked my husband as I sat in our local hotel bar (it's the only place that's open off-season), as we enjoyed a few hours away from the daily grind.
Well, the answer is of course there is: like a reminder that Early Menopause refers to when peri-menopause starts in between the ages of 40-45, whilst my condition is known as Primary Ovarian Insufficiency, as my peri-menopause started before the age of 40.
Also, I learned in this fantastic book by Dr Deirdre Lundy, is that so many women suffer in silence sometimes for decades.
Laz (the hub), sat patiently listening and commenting sympathetically until I talked in depth about some extreme cases of vaginal discomfort, at which I gave the man a break as I could see he was trying not to stick his fingers in his ears. In fairness, he has been a rock of support, flying me to Hungary to get the care I needed just WEEKS before Dr Lundy exploded onto the airwaves wtih Joe Duffy on RTE 1.
Oh, how I sobbed listening to the list of symptoms other women were going through, finally I was not alone. I wasn't losing my mind. What a relief.
It was a relief to know I hadn't had a mini-stroke = forgetfulness (brain fog), the migraines weren't caused solely by 2 glasses of wine (more like lack of food, carbs, over excercising, and the biggest one for me: disrupted sleep). Outbursts of rage didn't mean I had to hide in a cave for the rest of my life, as meno-rage is a real thing, not to mention crippling anxiety, low self-esteem and not sleeping through the night for years.
I wasn't alone. I didn't get to talk to anyone about it, but just listening helped. That's why I started our Women's Health Yoga Retreats in Croatia, so that women can come together and talk, under the sun while being fed nourishing food by a professional chef who has recently not only cooked for Bord Bia but also the Irish Ambassador here in Hungary, yes... that's my hub, Laz!

Whatβs your favourite calcium filled food? π₯π§π₯¬You are looking at osteopenia in my lower spine, most likely due to lack of oestrogen because of my POI (Primary Ovarian Insufficiency) - thatβs premature peri-menopause.
One of eostrogens many jobs is to keep our bones healthy. As we move into our 40s eostrogen and progesterone flunctuate as they decrease. Thatβs why it is incredibly inportant to keep our bones healthy, by consuming lots of calcium, dairy and / or plant based, getting vitamin D from sunshine βοΈ(in the winter a supplement is recommended), and doing plenty of bone strengthening exercise like weight bearing exercise and yoga.
I was unprepared as it all happened 10 years early for me, I hadnβt a clue I was peri-menopausal, I had no idea I was lacking oestrogen and that it was effecting my bones before I was even 40. Thats POI, it can go undiagnosed for years.
The positive Iβm taking from my early menopause is that hopefully I can help other women navigate peri-menopause and beyond. π§πΌββοΈβοΈπ Weβll be chatting lots about calcium and Womenβs Health in Croatia this May π―ββοΈβοΈ
