Trying out an afternoon format for this gathering so people who don't like driving at night time can attend. Hope to see you there. Any questions, feel free to reach out to either myself or Rosie.

Sitting vigil isn't for everyone.

"I can't see them like that."

Or, "I don't want my family to see me like that."

A fair thought, but usually one that comes with a lack of guidance about what the process of death is.

"Not like that," I hear them say. "Like what?" I ask back.

Vulnerable is the underlying answer. We are a culture removed from vulnerability. We pack vulnerability down in ourselves like trash compactors. We box it away behind closed doors in others. The reminder of how universally strange and difficult it is to be alive feels alien to us to witness, and we run from it.

I'll never push or insist a family to hold vigil, to be there for the dying itself.

But it can be and often is beautiful.

A holding, of space and hands and so much love.

We will all be there at some point, on whatever death bed we are allowed. I hope we all have the presence of heart and mind in those moments with each other.

Copied from Deathcafe.com

At a Death Cafe people, often strangers, gather to eat cake, drink tea and discuss death.

Our objective is 'to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives'.

A Death Cafe is a group directed discussion of death with no agenda, objectives or themes. It is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counselling session.

Our Death Cafes are always offered:

- On a not for profit basis

- In an accessible, respectful and confidential space

- With no intention of leading people to any conclusion, product or course of action

- Alongside refreshing drinks and nourishing food – and cake!
