Below is the email information I received with questions and answers from the Department yesterday.

[email protected] is the email address to send your grievances and queries too.

Further to my earlier statement, I want to state that I released it as an information to the public. Given the unbelievable short notice from the department I wanted to give local people a chance to be heard regardless of their views. I felt people couldn’t do anything about it after the people had moved in. We we’re not consulted in any way as a town either by the department or the property owners.

You came out in great numbers to air your frustration with the decision. Thanks to everyone who came along and respected the speakers.

While this is a National government issue I will be calling on Mayo County Council and the department to listen to my feedback from the people I have spoken to today and am meeting tomorrow.

Ballinrobe has always been willing to help out those less fortunate but this is a step to far. I would like to say to the Department and to the owner of this property that this is not good enough.

I am available for meeting anyone tomorrow Saturday afternoon by appointment.

Thanks
Michael

Statement from Councillor Michael Burke

Re; Housing of international protection applicants in Ballinrobe

I and my fellow public representatives were informed yesterday afternoon by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and youth that they would be commencing use of the former JJ Gannon’s Hotel on Main Street Ballinrobe. From next Monday January 8th there will be up to 50 male international protection applicants accommodated on the property. This is the first contact I have had confirming this development. The three local councillors including myself met with some community groups last night to inform them of the information we had received.
As councillors we have no say in this decision and all we can do is put pressure on Mayo County Council and the HSE to enhance local services to cater for the extra numbers in town. We will also be asking local support groups to liaise and work with these men to make their integration to our area a good process for everyone.

This is a challenging situation for services in our town but we have had challenges in the past that we have overcome. I want to make it clear that the Gannon family have no involvement in this property.

Great to see sections of footpaths replaced at inner New Street recently. These footpaths were in poor condition and a hazard to pedestrians. Im also glad to confirm the resurfacing of the road in the same estate will take place next spring. All of the monies for these works were provided from my funding allocation only.

Great to see the County Council lowering the wall at Dowagh, Cross.

This junction was extremely dangerous exiting on to the Cross to Neale road. This work will make it much safer for the residents and user’s of this road.
