Wexford in Lockdown
Wexford in ‘lockdown’ is an unusual sight. Ordinarily bustling streets are abandoned. People wearing face-masks as they take their daily exercise, something that would ordinarily perhaps have shocked, has now become common place. It’s a different world. Heading our for a bit of fresh air in the mornings, local photographer Lee Robinson started to bring his camera with him and what started as a way to keep himself occupied during the lockdown has very much become about documenting a place and time in history. Working alongside his wife Edyta as a wedding photographer, Lee initially started taking photos of Wexford in the midst of the Covid-19 crisis as a way to get out of the house. Since, he has been uploading daily photos from around town which have been shared hundreds of times across social media.
At first, Lee captured the unfamiliar sites of deserted Wexford streets, closed businesses and empty carparks. ‘I felt I was capturing the frightening side of it’ he said. ‘By day two or three I was starting to feel a little bit down about it myself. I decided I wanted to try and capture the upside of this a little more, so I started getting shots of people out for a walk and visiting relatives through the window and that type of thing’. ‘Strangely there’s more of a sense of society and community now than there was before’, Lee muses. ‘People are more up for a chat and they aren’t buried in their phones. People are afraid, but I will say that the spirit of the people of Wexford is unreal. I’ve been to other countries and my wife Edyta is from Poland, but there’s nothing quite like it anywhere. The positivity in the face of this this thing is unbelievable. Wexford always sticks together. Even though we’re disconnected in some ways we’ve also never be more connected.
