Sound advice from Kilmore Quay RNLI
Stay Safe the Christmas
The Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland and the RNLI have issued a joint appeal for the festive season, urging people to be mindful of the potential risks with their chosen activity and attend to their personal safety in planning and participating in any water based or coastal activities.
For those taking part in winter dips and swims the advice is:
β’ Never swim alone
β’ Ensure that somebody ashore is monitoring your activity
β’ Acclimatise slowly
β’ Stay within your depth
β’ Always be seen
β’ Organisers of Christmas day or New year swims are advised to have suitably trained personnel in attendance and to appoint a Safety Officer
Water-based activities at this or any time of year are not limited to swimming as the popularity of kayaking, canoeing, boating and paddle-boarding remains high. The safety advice for these activities includes:
β’ Always have a means for calling for help and make sure you can access it when you are out on the water.
β’ Tell someone where you are going and what time you expect to return.
β’ Wear a lifejacket or buoyancy aid.
β’ Always check the weather forecast and sea conditions before you set off.
β’ If you're exploring somewhere new, seek knowledge from experienced practitioners in the area.
If you see somebody in trouble on the water or along the coast, or think they are in trouble, dial 112 or 99 and ask for the Coast Guard.
Great giggles on the beach today but still getting the dips done. A little elf brought some mulled wine to warm the swimmers up π₯Άπͺπ»π

Thereβs no feeling quite like bringing someone home safe to their families β especially at Christmas. But as volunteers, our lifeboat crews couldnβt launch our lifeboats without kind donations from the public which fund the kit, training and equipment they need to save others and get home safely to their own families.
To make a donation to the RNLIβs Christmas Appeal, and enable the charity to continue its lifesaving work, visit: RNLI.org/WinterAppeal
Happy Winter Solstice to all our Followers
Please be aware of the weather warnings in your area today and follow the safety advice of Water Safety Ireland
Only dip within your depth and never dip alone.

π¨βοΈ Beware the Silent Danger of Ice this Christmas! βοΈπ¨
Areas with frozen lakes, ponds, canals, and reservoirs can be beautiful places to visit during the winter months but all too often many people risk their lives by venturing onto frozen water.
β
Stay off the ice at all times and never walk on a frozen waterway.
β
Do not play near the edge of a riverbank as it might crumble away suddenly.
Let's keep our celebrations merry, bright, and injury-free! πβ€οΈ
42 years ago today the Penlee Lifeboat Solomon Browne went to the aid of the vessel Union Star after its engines failed in heavy seas. After the lifeboat had rescued four people, both vessels were lost with all hands; in all, sixteen people died including eight volunteer lifeboatmen.
