Update from
team after launch on Friday 1 December 2023.
********

Reposted from Since launching on Friday, EIRSAT-1 has circled the Earth 34 times! The antenna have deployed successfully, the battery is healthy and charging and the team in UCD have successfully sent commands to the spacecraft 🥳

The team in California are flying home and excited to get back to Mission Control! Signals from EIRSAT-1 have been acquired both at our own ground station and by many brilliant radio enthusiasts all around the world.

A huge thank you to everyone who has shown their support and followed the launch campaign with us - we are overwhelmed by the amazing response and will try to keep you updated in the coming days.

******Reposted from 🚀🛰️ We have LIFTOFF! EIRSAT-1: Ireland successfully launches its first satellite into space

EIRSAT-1, a student-built satellite from University College Dublin, has been successfully launched into space, officially becoming Ireland's first-ever satellite.

The miniature cube satellite, or cubesat, designed, built, and tested at UCD under guidance of the European Space Agency (ESA), took flight at the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California aboard a Falcon 9 SpaceX rocket Friday evening (IST), 1st December.

It was successfully deployed around 8pm IST when it was confirmed that EIRSAT-1 was correctly injected into low Earth orbit.

“This represents the culmination of a lot of work by a young team and a huge amount of support by the Irish space industry, the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment, Enterprise Ireland, SFI and the IRC to deliver a thrilling result of Ireland in space,” said Professor Lorraine Hanlon, Director of EIRSAT-1 and the UCD Centre for Space Research (UCD C-Space).

“The next step now is to get used to operating our new spacecraft and get the maximum research and training out of it.”

The atmosphere post-launch was celebratory, said Dr Ronan Wall, UCD C-Space Manager, as members of the EIRSAT-1 watched their hard work blast off into space.

Adding: “It’s incredibly exciting and deeply satisfying to have finally joined other nations across Europe and the world that are positioned to do great research and innovation from our own spacecraft. We look forward to continuing to train and develop space expertise to support research and industry in Ireland. Go EIRSAT-1!”

Reposted from It’s launch day! 🚀🛰️ Ireland's first-ever satellite, designed, built and tested by staff and students - A fantastic example of creativity, innovation and teamwork at UCD 🇮🇪

🌌 The satellite is set to launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California today. It will carry three experiments into Low Earth Orbit and will report data back to a command center here at UCD 🛰️

👉This is a flagship project of UCD C-Space, the UCD Centre for Space Research, the UCD School of Physics and UCD School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering. The mission is backed by the European Space Agency - ESA in partnership with Irish companies active in the space industry SENSL and ENBIO Ltd. Its development at UCD has seen the introduction of space systems engineering and skills that have not previously existed in Irish industry or academia.

💬 Prof Lorraine Hanlon Director of EIRSAT-1 and UCD Centre for Space Research, pictured below with the team has shared: “Ireland has never had a satellite before and we are tremendously excited to reach this delivery milestone which is a tribute to the hard work of the team, and the support of the university, the Irish government and Irish industry.”

UCD welcomes the announcement that Minister Harris has secured Government approval for Ireland to join CERN.

"This is wonderful news to hear in Science Week", said Professor McNulty of the UCD School of Physics, "and ensures that the future will be bright for Irish students and researchers".

In June 2023, Professor McNulty showed Minister Harris around CERN, and today he met with the Minister to discuss the next steps on the road to membership.

UCD has the only experimental particle physics groups in Ireland.  They have helped in the construction of experiments at the Large Hadron Collider and participated in the discovery of the Nobel prize-winning Higgs boson.

Spinoffs of CERN technology are now being evaluated in Irish hospitals by physicists at the UCD Centre for Physics in Health and Medicine.

Membership of CERN will have significant impact for science in Ireland.  It will allow teachers and students to be trained at CERN, broaden the research opportunities, and involve Irish companies at the technology frontier.
